How To Cosplay – Genderbent Robin Hood

Art Cred: @illustrateIlluminate

People who know me know I’m a HUGE Once Upon A Time fan. I have been wanting to experiment with a gender bent character.

The character of Robin Hood is amazing. I didn’t like him at first because he was brought in as a love interest for Regina who I had wanted to end up with someone else. However, as the character progressed and grew in his own right, I grew to love him. And who doesn’t love a good Robin Hood?

Creating the character

I found the costume I wanted to replicate and and got reference photos from a bunch of different places. Here are the pieces broken down.

I started with my usual base costume. Brown leggings and a white cap sleeved shirt. These should probably be part of your regular wardrobe, but if you need them, here are a couple options (they are also cheap at local stores and thrift stores):

LEGGINGS

Prices are what I bought them at. Prices go up and down all the time. No promises you can find this price.

You can find brown leggings pretty much anywhere for cheap. I don’t recommend buying them online, but if you want to you can find then on any website. I’m not going to post anything else about it. Good luck.

CAP SLEEVE

This is the one I have purchased: I always wear a cap sleeve t-shirt under my cosplays for modesty purposes. The prices fluctuate on these significantly so be sure to do your homework.

I got two different white shirts to test out for the sleeves. One of them came in WAY too small (regardless of checking measurements). I was quite sad because that one should have been perfect, but the flair sleeved one worked well, so I stuck with that one.

Let that be a lesson to all. Just checking measurements is not enough. Be sure to check feedback for others opinions on how well the item fits.

Corset

I have been wanting this corset for over 2 years. I watched it in the $40 price range for a very long time. This cosplay and a deal finally made it possible. I was so excited!

The layering of the bags made great texture for the front of Robin’s outfit, and I attached the cape to the underside of the detachable jacket.

Gloves

Robin hood always has gloves. He has more gauntlet style gloves, but for the feminine version (and due to a VERY cheap and nice looking glove) I decided to go with a short glove. I was also hopeful this would allow a better view of the Lion Tattoo.

Cape, skirt and scarf

I wasn’t able to find “forest green” fabric at my main supplier…the local thrift store. So my first version had a lighter green fabric with leaves. I liked the look, but unfortunately it actually came across more “Snow White” than “Robin Hood”.

I looked and looked for the perfect color of fabric. I finally discover a sheet that was a bit more “royal green” than “forest green” but I thought it might work. Then I went home and decided to go through my fabric stash…and found the perfect color had been there the whole time! It was a bit more sheer than I liked, so I layered it with the “royal green” and I really like the result!
