Today’s photographer is someone we have seen before! This cosplayer is also a great photographer! (See her cosplay interview here)
WHAT IS YOUR NAME AND BUSINESS NAME?
I mostly go by Deku, but people also call me Junko and Axel.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE BEVERAGE?
Faygo! More specifically, Moon mist. I like plain water or lemonade the best though.
TELL ME A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELF.
I’m just a typical freelance photographer. I’m just getting my foot in the door at cons as I just turned 19 and I’ve only worked one con as of now, with the second one coming up soon.
WHEN DID YOU START COSPLAY PHOTOGRAPHY?
About a year ago! I was lucky enough for someone to hire me with just a small portfolio of nature photography, and the rest is history!
WHAT GOT YOU INTO PHOTOGRAPHY?
My mum, actually!! She used to work in one of those pop up studios they used to have in Walmarts everywhere so I often got to sit in and watch her work when I was little, and she eventually showed me how to work a camera and let me set up like scenes with the props they had.
WHAT MADE YOU GO INTO COSPLAY PHOTOGRAPHY SPECIFICALLY?
I like being able to help others show of their talents. Cosplaying is hard and seeing someone be able to pull of a character, no matter the persons skill level, is a gift.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN DOING PHOTOGRAPHY?
For years! I’ve only been doing events and the such for a year or so, but I’ve been doing it for fun pretty much as long as I can remember.
WHAT TYPES OF COSPLAY DO YOU LIKE TO SHOOT?
Any and all cosplays. Even if I don’t know the series, I can always look up the character and find out more.
WHAT IS YOUR PHOTO SHOOT GOALS, OR SOMETHING YOU WOULD LOVE TO SHOOT?
Hhhmmm….this is a bit of a hard question. I’ve already done quite a few shoots, but I suppose I would love to do another cute couples shoot!
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE KIND OF COSPLAY PHOTO SHOOT?
It’s a tie between couples shoots and single person shoots.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT COSPLAY PHOTOGRAPHY?
Getting to see people bring the characters they love to life. I adore seeing so many takes on the same character and how each person choses to portray them.
WHAT IS THE MOST DIFFICULT THING FOR YOU ABOUT COSPLAY PHOTOGRAPHY?
Editting. I have ADHD/ADD, so sitting at a screen and edittig for hours after a con is a pain in the neck. That, and lighting.
DO YOU HAVE ANY CAMERA EQUIPMENT YOU CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT?
Not really. I only had the base and two lenses at the moment due to monitary restrictions, although I’m hoping to upgrade my camera eventually.
IF YOU COULD LIVE IN OR VISIT ANY FANTASY WORLD, WHERE WOULD YOU GO?
Without a doubt, it’d be the world of My Hero Academia. I heavily relate to Izuku as I’ve always been a bit of an outcast due to being different.
IF YOU COULD GIVE COSPLAYERS TIPS ABOUT WORKING WITH A PHOTOGRAPHER, WHAT WOULD THEY BE?
Please, please have some poses in mind. It makes things so much easier on the photographer and it makes the shoot run smoother and faster. If you’re doing a group, do all the bigger shots first. As in group photo, and then all of one character, etc.
WHAT ARE YOUR “FANDOMS”?
At the moment, I’m mostly into BNHA, but I also enjoy Black Butler, OHSHC, Tokyo Ghoul, Danganronpa, and a few others in those sort of themes.
WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU WISH COSPLAYERS KNEW ABOUT WORKING WITH A PHOTOGRAPHER?
Most photographers won’t judge you for anything you wanna do. My first photoshoot was of a Waluigi cosplayer and I was just so happy to even be taking pictures that I didn’t care it was a meme cosplay. If you want a photoshoot in a character, ask. No matter how weird the character.
WHAT MISCONCEPTIONS DO YOU FEEL COSPLAYERS HAVE ABOUT WORKING WITH A PHOTOGRAPHER THAT YOU’D LIKE TO CLEAR UP?
That it’ll make things easier and the photographer knows everything. I do photoshoots outside of my fandom and I know nothing about the characters. And it only makes thing easier if you have a plan on how you want the photoshoot to go.
WHAT IS YOUR CREATIVE PROCESS?
I’m not entirely sure what this question means, so I’m going to take it as how I edit photos. I honestly just do what I think make the photo look richer in colour and overall better looking unless asked otherwise.
WHAT ARE SOME PROPER ETIQUETTE TIPS FOR BOOKING A PHOTOSHOOT AND PARTICIPATING IN ONE?
Booking a photoshoot? Just be polite. Same goes for participating. But if you’re part of a group photoshoot, please for the love of all things holy listen to what the photographer or the one over it is telling you. Before I did photography I held a meetup photoshoot just for fun and everyone was all over the place and it took forever the get the pictures done.
Where can we find you?
I’m Cozzi Cosplay Photography on Facebook, and @cozzicosplayphotography on Instagram!!
What is your Greatest Achievement?
Being able to volunteer at a con for the first time, as well as doing my first larger group shoot.
