Tell me a little about yourself?

Well I’m 40 later this year, love most things geeky, but totally a massive Dr. Who fan all my life.

I’m also a big Xbox gamer. I like drawing and my camera of course.

When did you start cosplay photography?

When did I start cosplay photography…let me think…it was April 2017 when a cosplayer by the name of Nightingale Cosplay answered my random post of anyone fancy a photoshoot.

What got you into photography?

This is a hard question, but easy too, and here’s why –

Growing up as a kid my dad had a camera and my grandad had a camera and would be amazed by my grandads shots (sorry dad lol). So growing up I always had some sort of camera in my hand. I always said one day I want a dslr camera like grandad had.

Cosplayers: Nightingale Cosplay, Gutsy Ninja Cosplay, HuskeyNinja

What made you go into cosplay photography specifically?

Well, it was on the back of all the love I got from putting all the photos I took from the comic con masquerade (which the cosplayers never see any pics of them on stage) online. All the “thank yous” I got and “these are amazing as no one ever puts these up”, and a few said “you should take it up”.

How long have you been doing photography?

Like I said long as I’ve been able to walk I have had a camera in my hand. But really doing something with it, this April will be my 2 year anniversary of starting.

What types of cosplay do you like to shoot?

Types? I don’t really have types as I’m a big general geek and I love seeing new cosplays and stunning cosplays I know nothing about the show there from. I like to challenge myself.

The way I look at it, the cosplayers want a photoshoot, that’s all that matters. As a photographer, your job is to make them look good while finding your style

What is your photo shoot goals, or something you would love to shoot?

Photo shoot goals, interesting question… each comic con I go to I get blown away by the standards of cosplay. They make my goals higher each year, as I have a job to make them look awesome. But personal goals, enjoying the ride really at the minute, got a wedding to do later in the year.

What is your favourite kind of cosplay photo shoot?

Favourite cosplay, I just love to shoot awesome cosplayers! But to answer your question: I’m a big joker fan, doctor who and the rwby gang who made me there official photographer to the meets.

What do you love about cosplay photography?

Well, I started cosplaying myself the same comic con as I posted the masquerade photos, and like I said I’ve always had a camera in my hand. So with the love and the buzz from the cosplayers loving the photos, and now they come to me asking if I’m free at the con to shoot. It’s a constant buzz for me that people want me to shoot them.

What is the most difficult thing for you about cosplay photography?

There can be a few things.like bad lighting at comic cons (like too many windows). But the hard thing about it is trying to to find each other sometimes.

Cosplayer: HettiShero

Do you have any camera equipment you can’t live without?

Well my camera would have to be one lol. And maybe my 200mm lens (even though I never take it to cons).

If you could live in or visit any fantasy world, where would you go?

I would love to visit Gotham, and live in gallifrey and the discworld universe.

If you could give cosplayers tips about working with a photographer, what would they be?

Don’t be shy, we don’t bite, we are here to take your photos if you want us to. And we all have cards to give out so you can find your photos. So basically unless you know the person, all photographers will have cards.

What are your “fandoms”?

Well my fandoms are : Rwby, Doctor Who, DC.

What is something you wish cosplayers knew about working with a photographer?

We don’t bite and if you think a shot can be done different or better (don’t be scared to say I think it could be done better this way) than the one we took, please tell us. We are open to new ideas, we will happily shoot and pose any angle your happy with.

What misconceptions do you feel cosplayers have about working with a photographer that you’d like to clear up?

We are probably just as nervous as you are, cause we have to make sure we are happy with the shot, and that you are happy with the shot. So not only we have our own standards, which are pretty high we like to think. So we think you will be pleased with the shots 1st time.

What is something you wish cosplayers knew before they booked a photography session?

Hard question. I can’t think of anything at hand, cause I have the laid back approach to photography. The more relaxed it is, more fun it becomes and poses are more genuine.

What is your creative process?

As far as process goes as a concept, I’m still finding one or its built in me somewhere as I’ve always had a camera in my hand. So I guess over the years I got a good eye for angles and shots. But how ever good we are, we never stop learning.

What are some proper etiquette tips for booking a photoshoot and participating in one?

Just the normal I would say. Ask us in a way you would expect us to talk and treat you. We are both doing our hobbies and to have fun. Our delight is you loving the shots we get of you and want to shoot with us again.

Where can people find your photography?

What is your greatest achievement (regarding cosplay photography)?

Greatest achievement regarding cosplay…. that’s surely one for the cosplayers to answer. But personally it would be when I was asked by Gutsy Ninja Cosplay to come to a comic con in 2017 because he was going to propose to he’s fiancé. Which leads to me doing their wedding this year.

What photographers you admire and possibly friends with?

Well there are four that jump to mind,

Donald Manning – if there a comic con anywhere in the UK, you can guarantee you will bump into him.

Robert Mann – Unique shooting style that is just awesome,  (likes to work you and your shadow).

Toneagraphy – A super friendly guy, with tips for cosplayers and budding photographers.

Bob Long – Just an absolute awesome dude and friend.

Please remember I do not own any of these pictures and the opinions in this survey belong to the interviewee.
