Weirdies Supporting Weirdies!

Cosplayer Spotlight – Anthony Porter

For our first cosplayer of the week, who doesn’t love a Superman Cosplayer? Enjoy!

Hi, can you introduce yourself?

My name is Anthony Porter.

What is your favorite beverage?

My favourite drink is black coffee.

When did you start cosplaying?

I started cosplaying in 2015.

Why did you start cosplaying?

A guy I know on Facebook (Aaron Price) who does a fantastic General Zod was looking for a Non and Ursa. I had the beard for Non so I decided to give it a go with my kids who also cosplayed Zod, Ursa and Superman with me.

Who are your cosplay idols?

Jason Evans, he cosplays a fantastic Superman.

What type of cosplay do you do?

I only do the one cosplay at the moment and it’s superhero.

What are your favorite cosplays?

My favourite cosplays are star wars, especially the stormtroopers. I just think they look amazing.

What is something you want to cosplay but probably never will?

Probably stormtroopers but funding would be the issue.

Do you make or buy?

For my Non costume I made it out of a black karate suit and black duct tape. My Superman suit I bought from custom costumes but I’ve added puff paint for the chainmail effect and recoloured all of the trim.

What do you love about cosplay?

I love how it brings together so many people who have a love for the same thing, regardless of race, gender etc.

What is the most difficult thing for you about cosplay?

The most difficult thing for me is listening to the constant bitching and backstabbing that goes on in groups on Facebook. There’s bigger problems in this world than arguing over how accurate someone’s cosplay is. At the end of the day it’s a hobby to have fun with.

Who is your favorite character to cosplay?

Being a huge Superman fan there is only one answer to that…… Superman!

If you could live in/visit any fantasy tell, where would you go?

It’s got to be Krypton from Man of Steel, only to visit though (well before it blows up lol)

Where do you get your inspiration for your cosplays?

I follow a page on Facebook called The Evolution of Superman. There so many different variations of the character costume on there in cosplay it’s amazing for ideas.

What are your “fandoms”?

Anything Superman or DC related.

What is something you wish beginning cosplayers knew?

Being in costume and on your feet all day isn’t easy and can be very tiring, especially on hot days.

What tips do you have for other cosplayers?

Be very patient when creating your costumes. Puff painting my Superman suit took me around 2 months to complete but was worth it when complete.

What is something you wish non-cosplayers knew?

The cost and hard work that goes into every costume and how fragile alot of the costumes are before you decide to put your hands all over someone else’s hard work and potentially ruin it.

What cosplays are you working on?

I’m not currently working on any new cosplays.

What cosplays do you want to do if money and time were no object?

There’s a company on Facebook called Youngknight prop studios who make the most screen accurate Man of Steel costume that I’d love. It would cost me around £2,500 for it and a flex design muscle suit to go underneath.

Where can people find your cosplays?

My Facebook page

Is that your real hair?

The answer is no, it’s a wig. I look like Lex Luthor without it.

Please remember I do not own any of these pictures and the opinions in this survey belong to the interviewee.
