Weirdies Supporting Weirdies!

Cosplayer Spotlight – Madi Does Cosplay

I am thrilled to present this exciting cosplayer. She is a Disney girl after my own heart and she has a lot of great insights (not to mention cosplays)! Enjoy the first cosplayer of the week!

What can we call you?

Madi Barnicoat

What is your favorite beverage?

Tea! I could drink enough tea a day to create an ocean!

When did you start cosplaying?

I started cosplaying about 2 and 1/2 years ago, at MCM London in October 2015

Why did you start cosplaying?

That us actually a funny story! My friend happened to be going to con with her family all dressed in cosplay and she was going as Elsa from Disneys Frozen and was asking around the friendship group if people wanted to join her and go as Anna! I just happened to say yes! Ever since then cosplay has gradually become my life and I have found so many amazon new friends and people because of it!

Who are your cosplay idols?

That is a tough one but one of my Cosplay Idols has got to be Rian Synth. I love her range of different cosplays but also she is such a genuinely great person! Another cosplayer I look up to is Traci hines her cosplay is amazing, but she is also a singer and she creates the most beautiful music! And lastly a girl called Courtney and on Instagram as Sparkycosplays. She is so talented, and kind hearted but also struggles with illnesses which I can relate to in my own way. I think she is one of the most inspirational and amazing people I have come across and inspires me constantly!

What type of cosplay do you do?

I do a bit of everything and I hope to so so much more! So far I have done many Disney princesses (Ariel, Sleeping Beauty etc); I have done Disney villans (ie Cruellea DeVille) I have done DC Harley Quinn in different designs; I have done Art Nouveau Avatar Aang, designed by Hannah Alexander and more! I plan on expanding my cosplays more for the future years and have got some great cosplays in store which I hope you will love in the works!

What are your favorite cosplays?

My favourite so far is probably my Art Nouveau Avatar Aang from ‘The Last Airbender’ just because Im really proud of it and how i made it. It was the first cosplay I made completely from scratch. I hope to do more photoshoots in at and improve on it more.

What is something you want to cosplay but probably never will?

Probably the Faun from Pans Labyrinth. I really want to do this cosplay I think it would be SO SO AWESOME but the cost of it and all the prosthetics are something that I’m not sure I could do but you know dreams might come true!

Do you make or buy your cosplays?

I do a mixture of everything. I make the Majority of my costumes down to the smallest details I can do. I do my own wig styling and costume making. I even made my shoes for my Suicide Squad Harley Quinn. But props, they are a no go for me… I just can’t figure out how to do them! I am slowly learning the sorcery behind the works of them but for the moment I’ll be buying my props!

What do you love about cosplay?

I love making my costumes most. I have always been a very hands on person, and making my costumes makes me proud of what I can do! But also I love the community. I love how everyone at a con comes together to celebrate the things that they love. I cosplay not only to make myself happy, make my costumes and show them off to people ect, but also because i love making others happy and to see someone smile because you are their favourite character, I cannot explain the feeling but it definitely makes me happy!

What is the most difficult thing for you about cosplay?

Time and money! I have so many ideas of what I want to do in my mind for my cosplays and I am still only 18. I live with my parents still, and I’m still at collage. Trying to source fabric is hard due to my location and trying to buy good fabric with the small amount of money I earn from my part time job means I have to my cosplays little by little each month as it can be very time consuming and expensive!

Who is your favorite character to cosplay?

I can’t chose a favorite character to cosplay each character I have cosplayed and have planned to cosplay are all my favorite in different ways. Each character has their own trait that I love and is why I choose cosplay so many different characters.

If you could live in orvisit any fantasy world, where would you go?

I don’t know, that’s a really heard question!! I think I would visit everywhere but for living I would pick just one, and that would be earth. It is my home and where all my friends family and loved ones are so I would definitely stay living on earth!

Where do you get your inspiration for your cosplays?

Everywhere. From the tv series its from, from artists work, from other cosplayer, to just people walking passed me on the street!

What are your “fandoms”?

EVERYTHING! I’m probably mostly a Disney gal at heart but I like pretty much everything (except horror or scary stuff!!) Naruto is one of my favorite anime’s and not many people know it! So you could say I’m definitely in that fandom!

What is something you wish beginning cosplayers knew?

Enjoy yourself and don’t compare yourself to the cosplayers around you! If you are wandering around a con one you see someone cosplaying the same character as you and it is completely screen accurate, the makeup is out of this world with all sorts of SFX and lights in their costume and you have a costume for a £20 budget you are no better or worse than them. I can guarantee you that person is not a newbie and has been doing this for a long long time! And if you are wanting to take cosplay seriously, fame, well, it does not come overnight! It takes hard work to get there but if you have the drive and it it is what you really what to do then you will get there!

What tips/tricks do you have for other cosplayers?

You tube and experimentation is your best friend when wanting to make stuff. I am completely self taught in what I do. Whenever you start something you are going to be at the bottom but it takes time and patience to refine a skill! And have fun! There is no point in doing it if you don’t enjoy it! Don’t go along with the crowd and do mainstream cosplays if you don’t what to! If you want to cosplay Harley Quinn then do it, if you want to cosplay Naruto then do it, but if you also want to cosplay that background character in your favorite game or anime or movie then do it! Don’t let others control you.

What is something you wish non-cosplayers knew?

This has been said so many times but I will say it again for people who have not heard! If you see a cosplayer around and want to talk to them say hi have a picture, whatever do come and say hi, we don’t bite and that is actually one of the reasons we cosplay at cons so please don’t be shy! But please do be careful around our costumes and props. We spend hours putting in our hard work, time and money into our costumes and they can sometimes be very delicate. One of my costumes can cost up to £300 just for the clothing alone! If you want to hug us please ask, if you want to hold our prop please ask. 9/10 cases the cosplayer will say yes (unless he or she is having a break and eating or something, then wait!) we are people just like you and so please treat us like it!

What cosplays are you working on?

Many, many cosplays are in the works! I’m one of those people who have several projects going on at once! I am currently making my original design of Gayrados from Pokemon, Snow white, Roller derby Harley Quinn for a Harleys of the ages group 2018, Genderbent Jim Hawkins from treasure planet for a Genderbent Disney group in October 2018, Halo armor is happening and many many more!

What cosplays do you want to do if money and time were no object?

Once again Pan from Pans Labyrinth. It is a dream cosplay of mine which will cost me an arm, a leg and probably an extra toe but if time and money were not an issue then it would be a possibility!

Where can people find your cosplays?

I post most regularly on my Instagram page www.instagram.com/madidoescosplay/ and I do have a Facebook page under the same name. Madi Does Cosplay.

What kind of stuff do you do outside of cosplay?

I am a College student studying art and design and this is my second and final year! I hope to go and be a costume designer and or seamstress in the future. I also have a part time job looking after adults and children with physical and learning difficulties.

Please remember I do not own any of these pictures and the opinions in this survey belong to the interviewee.

Awesome blog you have here but I was wondering if you knew of any forums that cover the same topics talked about here? I’d really like to be a part of group where I can get suggestions from other experienced people that share the same interest. If you have any recommendations, please let me know. Bless you!
