Weirdies Supporting Weirdies!

Cosplayer Questions – Alana Owlet

Welcome to the week everyone! Six more Cosplayers to get to know. The first, an adorable cosplayer with years of experience. Enjoy!

Please introduce yourself.

Alana Owlet

What is your favorite beverage?

Boring old water. Sorry for being picky and having an uninteresting answer haha!

When did you start cosplaying?

I’ve been cosplaying since 2006. Personally I find it amazing to see how much this hobby and the community have changed in that time. The number of resources and ways to connect with other cosplayers is mindblowing, especially compared to how little there was back in the day. Finding fabric and materials used to be such a pain and now there are patterns and fabrics designed specifically for cosplayers! It’s nuts.

Why did you start cosplaying?

Some friends were going to DragonCon and they had costumes so I went and I had some costumes. It wasn’t really a decision like oh I’m a cosplayer now let’s do this. I’ve been sewing all my life so I guess it just kind of went from that to costumes pretty easily.

Who are your cosplay idols?

I don’t know that I have any, but I really look up to Elendriel Alastair. (You can find her across social media with that handle.) We haven’t gotten to cosplay together for a few years but her skill level and passion for this hobby is just miles beyond anyone I have ever met.

What types of cosplay do you do?

A mix of everything really. I tend to pick costumes based on what I think looks like it will be a fun challenge to make, rather than because I like a specific character or show or something. I probably have more anime and video game costumes than anything else but there’s a real mix of everything in there.

What are your favorite cosplays?

The question I was dreading! I can honestly never pick. There are some costumes like my N7 armor that I love because I love Mass Effect but I’m overall not happy with the final result of the costume. Or something like Sarah Jane Smith from Doctor Who where the costume looks great but was very simple and wasn’t something I felt like challenged me in any way to make. I think I might have to say Karin Miyoshi from Yuki Yuna is a Hero. She’s a character I love and while it’s nowhere near the most complex or challenging outfit Iv’e ever made I think the final result is very clean and it made me happy to wear her.

What is something you want to cosplay but probably never will?

A Big Daddy from Bioshock! I would love to try to make that! But I am very tiny so I don’t know that I’d be able to pull it off the way I dream of haha. I may have to convince a friend to let me make it for them and tag along as a Little Sister or something.

Do you make, buy, or special order your cosplays?

I make everything I wear. For me that’s the most fun part of cosplay. I look forward to the challenge of making something and spending hours on it to create something I’m happy with. Actually wearing it comes a pretty distant second.

What do you love about cosplay?

Guess I shouldn’t have just typed that big thing about making stuff but that’s it. I also really love being able to connect with other people in this hobby. It’s such an amazing community of people who are so passionate about so many things and I love that.

What is the most difficult thing for you about cosplay?

I don’t know that there is one to me. I like to tackle hard projects and challenge myself so if something is difficult I try to just look at it as an opportunity to learn that new skill or try that new thing. I’m not great at wigs, let’s go with that.

Who is your favorite character to cosplay?

Probably Lulu from Yurikuma Arashi because she’s got big old comfy bear feet and sometimes it’s nice to just have a costume with comfy shoes!

If you could live in/visit any fantasy tell, where would you go?

Middle Earth. But I’d just stay in the Shire, I would 100% not be going on quests or adventures. I’m staying where it’s nice and had good weather and there’s food and I don’t have to do anything.

Where do you get your inspiration for your cosplays?

I think it’s the same as everyone where you just see something and whether it’s because of the design or the character or whatever your brain just goes I GOTTA MAKE THAT.

What are your “fandoms”?

This is going to sound so snobby but I generally stay out of fandoms. Too much drama. I just want to sit and enjoy a show in a vacuum and not have to listen to other people complain about it or whatever.

What is something you wish beginning cosplayers knew?

Just go for it! There are no rules besides cosplay what you want to. Do your own thing, push yourself and have fun.

What tips and tricks do you have for other cosplayers?

Funny you should ask that! I have a Youtube Channel were I post a lot of tips and tricks videos on tons of subjects. If you want to watch me ramble about how you absolutely need to iron your costumes, you can watch here!

What is something you wish non-cosplayers knew?

That’s actually something I tackle a lot on Youtube too. I have a whole Clueless About Cosplay series where my sister and her husband who know absolutely nothing about this hobby narrate my worklogs, try on costumes or have other cosplay related adventures. It’s pretty interesting (and funny!) to hear some of their observations and realize how differently people see this hobby from the way we do. Overall I think most people I meet who don’t cospaly are really interested in it and happy to hear more about it. So I guess I’d say don’t be afraid to ask questions, normal people!

What cosplays are you working on?

Right now for Katsucon I just finished up Aigis from Persona 3 and am working on Sakizou’s illustration for the Witch Responsible for Spring. Hopefully I’ll have them all finished up in the next week or two. I like to get things done well before conventions.

What cosplays do you want to do if money and time were no object?

I’d just have to see what I get inspired for I guess! Up until last month Aigis was my ultimate dream costume but I just finished her up so uhhhh… Who knows?

Where can people find your cosplays?

On Instagram @alanaowlet, and Youtube at I like meeting people, hit me up nerds!

Please remember I do not own any of these pictures and the opinions in this survey belong to the interviewee.
