Cosplayer Spotlight – Bart_Michael_Cosplay

Welcome to Monday! I hope those of you who had conventions this weekend I hope you are recuperating. Continue your awesome cosplay life by meeting this great cosplayer.

WHAT IS YOUR NAME?

@Bart_Michael_Cosplay

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE BEVERAGE?

Typically water if my cosplays are on schedule, definitely craft beer when I am trending behind!

TELL ME A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELF.

I come from a small rural town in central Pennsylvania in the United States, but most definitely[CB1]  am not a farm boy. Played sports my entire life and love to volunteer especially for any form of children’s charity or education. An engineer and bar owner by day and a nerdy comic book loving cosplayer at night. I love to entertain and be the center of attention especially if it makes someone happy.

WHEN DID YOU START COSPLAYING?

I have been cosplaying for over 4 years none professionally and only to visit children’s hospitals and local events. New to the professional cosplay scene as of early 2019 and very recently started getting my name out there and going to larger cons in the United States. I am always down for a collaboration.

WHY DO YOU COSPLAY?

I cosplay to raise awareness for children’s health and education charities, and deep down to fuel my inner child as well. There is something about bringing joy and doing something selfless for someone that really brings a sense of purpose to what I do. Being extremely crafty and always needing to use my hands and engineering skills, cosplay was the perfect outlet to satisfy my little quirks and addictions.

WHO ARE YOUR COSPLAY IDOLS?

Wow this is more difficult than I thought to pick a few! I would definetly have to say that Kamui Cosplay, BlueStone Designs, Hanna In Wonderland, Kikicarnage, and Castlecosplay are my top. They all bring something different to the table and make such original work that it is hard to not be inspired by what they do. Kamui Cosplay is by far my favorite YouTube cosplay idol since their videos have helped me since day one.

WHAT TYPES OF COSPLAY DO YOU DO?

For the past four years I have been mainly DC Comic super villains with a focus on Batman for sure. This upcoming year I am switching it up to Marvel but sticking with the villains. Being bad feels so much better than being good.

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE COSPLAYS?

If I had to pick out of all my cosplays my favorites thus far would be the Riddler and Mr. Freeze. The Riddler was so detailed and really was a big hit with the kids that I play him regularly now. As for Mr. Freeze, he was the most challenging and satisifying cosplay I have done. First time working with EVA foam and I became a “self-taught” air brush artist.

WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU WANT TO COSPLAY BUT PROBABLY NEVER WILL?

Definitely Ironman! I attempted a few years ago but my OCD and selfcriticism will not let me make anything but a movie accurate replica of his suit. So to save myself the stress, and lower my blood pressure, I do not think I will do Ironman. Sorry Mr. Stark!

DO YOU MAKE, BUY, OR SPECIAL ORDER YOUR COSPLAYS?

It is a combination of both actually. I am not the best sewer so anything I can find (suits, jackets, gloves, etc) I buy and alter with items I make. I try to make as much of the cosplay as possible, but If I can’t, to the internet I go! Hopefully in the future I will have a large enough work space to make them all 100%.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT COSPLAY?

The freedom to be yourself, and the community of amazing artists. There is just something amazing about sharing your art with fellow cosplayers and appreciating each other’s work. All of the gasps, surprised faces, and smiles are what make it all worth it. Plus, who doesn’t like to dress up just to escape work?

WHAT IS THE MOST DIFFICULT THING FOR YOU ABOUT COSPLAY?

Being patient and taking your time! It is very difficult to plan a cosplay and it not take up until the second you walk in the con door to finish it. I struggle having to take short cuts or create something below my capabilities just to make a deadline. It actually physically hurts to know the little mistakes you made as you wear it, even if no one will ever know it.

WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE CHARACTER TO COSPLAY?

It depends on my mood really, but if I had to pick it would be the Riddler. He is mysterious, cunning, and just fun to give out riddles to people and watch them attempt to figure it out. It is just a great character to play in all venues and he is easily recognizable.

IF YOU COULD LIVE IN OR VISIT ANY FANTASY WORLD, WHERE WOULD YOU GO?

Asgard all day! Love the old school mythical and Viking like culture. It would be interesting fighting, drinking, fighting again, and drinking all day. Oh and of course because the Bifrost lets you go anywhere else in the universe instantly, so why not give it a try.

WHERE DO YOU GET YOUR INSPIRATION FOR YOUR COSPLAYS?

All my inspiration  comes from the several comics I read and have read, along with all the fellow amazing cosplayers out there. Bringing a childhood character to life and pulling it from the page hits home with the inner child.

WHAT ARE YOUR “FANDOMS”?

Well basically anything mainstream comic book universe like DC (Batman) and Marvel (Spider-Man), and of course Dragonball Z.

WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU WISH BEGINNING COSPLAYERS KNEW?

How much hard work and passion it will take to bring your vision to life. You really have to put a lot of effort and time into a cosplay or have a real passion for it. All beginning cosplayers should know what they are looking to accomplish with their work.

WHAT TIPS OR TRICKS DO YOU HAVE FOR OTHER COSPLAYERS?

Some tips for my fellow cosplayers are: 1) Make sure you practice practice PRACTICE! Always try something new that you haven’t done before, but trust me practice on several smaller projects or pieces first. 2) Brain storm and plan your cosplay out. Don’t be afraid to lay it all out in front of you, sketch, design, and get a real good idea of what you are getting into. 3) Make it unique to you! Almost all of your favorite characters have been cosplayed before, so what? Do the best version that YOU want it to. Put a spin on a classic, or even mash several universes together.

WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU WISH NON-COSPLAYERS KNEW?

That cosplay is a community of caring, non-judgmental, amazing people. We all live to impress and support each other. We are always openminded and ready to get back to work!

WHAT COSPLAYS ARE YOU WORKING ON?

If I told you, I would have to….. well it is top secret right now, but I can tell you it is an antihero from the marvel universe. It will be straight fire!

WHAT COSPLAYS DO YOU WANT TO DO IF MONEY AND TIME WERE NO OBJECT?

Every Spider-Man villain there is! I would love to be able to create a life like functional Green Goblin (with hover board), or a fully functional Vulture based on the video game. All the best villains require mechanically complicated and expensive moving parts to really do them the justice they deserve.

WHERE CAN PEOPLE FIND YOUR COSPLAYS?

All my cosplays and new content can be found on Instagram or Facebook @bart_michael_cosplay. There you will can see all my upcoming comic cons, collaborations, and future appearances. One day soon I hope to have the website complete, to share my work with the world.

What comic con would you want to attend but have/can not?

San Diego Comic Con, biggest one in the world!

Please remember I do not own any of these pictures and the opinions in this survey belong to the interviewee.
