Cosplayer Spotlight – Candy Arts

Hi! What is your name?

My name is Morne but I generally go by the handles Candy or Candy Arts
The name derives from Candy Man. Which is a double meaning name.
I could be referring to a guy that makes your life happy by giving you sweets, or to the simile for a serial killer. Have fun guessing

I am a South African cosplayer, illustrator and student makeup artist. I’m quite the geek and have been accused of being unapproachable, but I’m actually really more socially awkward than most people who want to say hi. I’m basically a huge cosplay fanboy and will most likely start a convo with “Omygosh I love this costume/character/game/anime”

What is your favorite beverage?

I’m a soda junkie. I need a lot of sugar at most times of the day. Unhealthy I know but my health is a whole other story.

When did you start cosplaying?

Age 16. There was a small cosplay event at my local mall and I went with a bunch of friends. After cosplaying once I really just wanted to do it more often

Why did you start cosplaying?

Around the time Suicide Squad came out, a friend of mine followed the trend of dressing as Harley Quinn. She said it was cool and suggested a cosplay event to me and I tried it out

Who are your cosplay idols?

So many. Like so many. I think the main one would be Kinpatsu cosplay. I actually met her at my first con. Black Lilly cosplay as well since she is basically my teacher. I would be nothing without her

What types of cosplay do you do?

I’m definitely focused on anime and games. Games mostly JRPG’s. I do love obscure characters. Its often such a blessing at cons when someone walks up to me and guesses exactly what I am

What are your favorite cosplays?

I don’t really have one. All of them hold a special place in my heart. Each cosplay may not receive the same amount of effort or time or exposure, but each one is something that I definitely love being

What is something you want to cosplay but probably never will?

Sebastian Michaelis from Black Butler. I’m a huge fan of the anime and manga. Sebastian is defs a character I want to be but the reason why never is because his outfit is just slightly basic. I want to, in cosplay, create things distinct and interesting

Do you make, buy, or special order your cosplays?

All my intricate costumes have been hand made by me. Often there’s a chill costume I would like to do so I just scratch through my closet and alter some things. But overall, wig styling, sewing, props and makeup are by me

What do you love about cosplay?

I love bringing characters to life and pretending to be all my favorites and just basking in the moments when people recognise the character or ask for photos or leave nice comments. All that is just so amazing

What is the most difficult thing for you about cosplay?

That would be getting supplies. I am a South African cosplayer. We don’t have the utmost of access to things that other larger cosplay communities have, and if we do it’s usually quite expensive. But as we grow that problem is slowly diminishing. I’m still broke tho so…

Who is your favorite character to cosplay?

One of my recents, Shuichi Saihara, is growing on me slowly. Its quite a casual costume. I can wear it easily and I don’t have to struggle too much with makeup. I also physically identify with him. He is basically my spirit animal

Where do you get your inspiration for your cosplays?

Easy one. My friends. The cosplay community here is so small. We all know each other and every time someone does something, everyone knows and its so cool and you just want to cosplay because they are

What are your “fandoms”?

WHERE DO I BEGIN? . Informal I know. The biggest one is definitely Danganronpa. I’m a huge fan of the entire series. Second standing is probably pokemon. And definitely Steven Universe. DM me about Steven Universe I will bombard you with theories.

What is something you wish beginning cosplayers knew?

The pro cosplayers are not as intimidating as you’d think. In fact I think I only really know what I’m doing because I stopped a pro at a con and I had a long discussion with her about how she did everything. Often people don’t see my progress so when people ask me how I do something I am more than happy to answer

What tips or tricks do you have for other cosplayers?

Do not let people on the internet say you are doing something wrong. Also bring a cosplay repair kit to a con. You will thank me

What is something you wish non-cosplayers knew?

The whole ‘cosplay is not consent’ movement. I am a heavy supporter. I think they should just print the words underneath the name of the con. Like please. Don’t touch.

What cosplays are you working on?

A lot of Danganronpa. I’m actually trash for the new game. I’m also working on a semi intricate Ciel Phantomhive costume. Quite excited for it actually.

What cosplays do you want to do if money and time were no object?

There’s this one character from League of Legends. Vladimir. He has this epic af red coat and I love it and I want it but it would bankrupt me

Where can people find your cosplays?

I’m most active on Instagram. My user name is: candy_arts_cosplay
I have a Facebook page. Where I post some tutorials and progress
I’m on Tumblr as : candyartscosplay
And I’m on Cosplay Amino as : CandyGuy

What do you want people to do if they find out they are going to the same con as you?

Well firstly, invite me to conventions, email the hosts and get them to book me please.
Secondly. Come say hi. I am an awkward person. I want people to start convos 90% of the time. Talk to me about fandoms and take pictures.
And if you bring me food I will automatically love you

Please remember I do not own any of these pictures and the opinions in this survey belong to the interviewee.
