There are going to be some amazing changes coming to this blog shortly, but while you are waiting, please enjoy getting to know this adorable cosplayer!
WHAT IS YOUR NAME?
Origins of username:
My user name originated from a series called Shadowhunters. This is one of my very favorite fandoms and book series ever. The more known books are the Mortal Instruments. There are prequels called the Infernal Devices. This series has my heart. So, my username originated from the book title Clockwork Angel. One day I will cosplay someone from that series but for now I was able to do Emma Carstairs.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE BEVERAGE?
I have always been a big soda drinker, but I am picky about my soda. Coke is superior to all, no it’s definitely not the same as Pepsi and tastes way better don’t @ me.
TELL ME A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELF.
I put these categories together because they intertwine. Since I was very young, I was always outwardly an athlete and jock and internally a huge nerd, though embarrassed of it at the time. It runs in the family though my parents took me to see Star Wars and LoTR when they came out in theaters, my dad bought me the first gen xbox, my mom had been forcing me to dress up for the Renaissance Faire since I was 8, but at the time that it wasn’t who I wanted to be it wasn’t who I wanted people to see. I grew up playing highly competitive sports. At current I am 23 years old which means I have been playing competitive soccer for 17 years and track for 11 years. I am very passionate about athletics they have driven me to become the person I am today. I was a 4-year varsity collegiate athlete. My freshman year I dual sported with soccer and track, in the end I decided to focus on my sprinting career. I was a 13-time place winner, 4 first place finishes, and hold two school records at my university. I am very proud of my athletic career and I wouldn’t have changed it for the world. With such a focus on sports and being constantly surrounded by sports that’s who I was. No one else. So, I pushed all my nerdy interests. It’s something I was used to, I never let my true colors out until about senior year of college. I was always too afraid to be judged, too afraid to be left by my friends but after coming out of a toxic relationship of 2 years I had nothing. I didn’t have friends or a life, so I resorted back to my roots, to what made me feel better and it sparked something in me, and it just keeps on growing. I stopped caring. I told myself I would never be treated so poorly, never be degraded, never be put on a shelf as someone’s doll again. I was going to be exactly who I wanted to be. I was going to wear my heart on my sleeve and anyone who judged or laughed was immediately going to be dismissed. But you know what? It didn’t happen. No one laughed, no judged, I only gained new friends and stronger friendships with the old. I was able to grow in confidence and strength. I wasn’t able to cosplay until I graduated due to being a full time athlete but I spent most of my free time sketching, anime binging, and gaming with friends. After I graduated, I went to my first con and fell in love. I made an Instagram and Tiktok and people have never been kinder. I have made some of the best friends I will ever have thanks to cosplay and continue to meet wonderful people! I let my passion soar and people let me know I wasn’t alone. I wasn’t weird and it was okay to be different. I’m so thankful for the journey I have been on and I can’t wait to see what’s next. Let’s see where this road leads. (photo by Mom)
WHO ARE YOUR COSPLAY IDOLS?
Hmm, my number one cosplay crush has to be Hendoart. Everything she does is just unreal and when I first started fully committing to cosplay it was her YouTube tutorials that got me through. She’s everything I hope to be.
WHAT TYPES OF COSPLAY DO YOU DO?
Honestly, I don’t have too much of a preference. When it comes to Tiktok those are usually small closet cosplays of anime characters, particularly from Fairytail. Lucy Heartfilia is my favorite anime character, so I hope one day to make all of her stardresses (I’ve made two so far!!). I am a big video game cosplayer since gaming has always been a huge part of my life. However, I do hope to expand and do some movie and TV show cosplays. I get detached from them sometimes since they already are real people so there’s no way, I can make myself look like that? That’s why for now… I stick to fantasy… also they have crazy fun outfits anyway!
WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU WANT TO COSPLAY BUT PROBABLY NEVER WILL?
This is tough.. There are so many things I would like to cosplay, but I don’t ever think to myself, that will never happen. I like to keep an open mind and keep options. There are things I’d like to cosplay in the future, but I know I can’t right now due to skill level but once I practice and grow, they will come. Those might include a Mandalorian from Star Wars, female Darth Maul is a huge dream of mine, Tiny Tina, Assassins Creed, and more.
DO YOU MAKE, BUY, OR SPECIAL ORDER YOUR COSPLAYS?
A healthy combination. There are quite of few costumes and props I have that have been 100% scratch built by me, for example Star Guardian Soraka. It has taken me six weeks of work so far to build her. I still would like to add wings, lights, upgrade shoes, and add props but she was a full build I did. Whereas several of my Lucy cosplays include a handmade shirt and a whip or a handmade robe on top of a base piece blue school skirt or white frill shirt. Often, I go to the thrift store and buy an item close to my end goal and alter, dye, or paint. Then on occasion where I know my skill level, I will buy a costume I love. 2b from NIER:Automata was purchased because I knew I didn’t have the knowledge to build yet. (Photo by it.is.cosplay)
WHAT IS THE MOST DIFFICULT THING FOR YOU ABOUT COSPLAY?
My overreaching need for perfection. It is a blessing and a curse. I have such an eye for detail that I must add every little mark, paint every little flower, hand sew every single stitch just to reach an exact replica of the costume. It can be great because it forces me to take time and do things correctly. It is also the worst because it can drive me nuts. I will obsess over it and not sleep also it limits my ability to add my own personal touch. I see people all the time add their own flare, dress in the characters aesthetic and change the look and they absolutely kill it. I fall in love with other people’s takes on characters, but I have such a hard time doing it myself. Also hand sewing, hand sewing sucks.
Who is your favorite character to cosplay?
I don’t think I have a favorite, but a favorite personality type would be energetic, crazy, or even villainous. It’s just fun not only to look like the character but to put on a show too.
IF YOU COULD LIVE IN OR VISIT ANY FANTASY WORLD, WHERE WOULD YOU GO?
This is random combination… Fairytail, Harry Potter, or Sword Art Online
Where do you get your inspiration for your cosplays?
I usually get an idea randomly scrolling through Instagram or Tiktok but all of my planning comes from my Pinterest.
WHAT ARE YOUR “FANDOMS”?
Just going to list away here Shadowhunters, Fairytail, LoTR, Harry Potter, GOT, SAO, Made In Abyss, Darling in the Franxx, Seraph of the End, Hunger Games, Borderlands, NIER:Automata, Black Clover, SDS, Halo, Assassins Creed, Gears of War, Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood, True Blood, Once Upon a Time, etccccc
WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU WISH BEGINNING COSPLAYERS KNEW?
This isn’t going to be advice since I still think of myself heavily as a beginner however what I wish I knew… How do cosplayers manage long haired wigs?? I keep trying to buy them because they’re elegant and beautiful and the SECOND I put them on my head they are frizzy and tangled and I can’t comb it out…EVER. Well I guess I’ll offer advice since I ranted… If you aren’t patient have zero hair styling skills stick to shorter wigs. Also, cosplay is usually made of super cheap household items just altered to look fancy. So, save your money and search your old junk.
WHAT COSPLAYS ARE YOU WORKING ON?
I am currently working on 4 costumes for my next con: New York Comic Con. The cosplays include Queen Atlanna (Aquaman), Lilith (Borderlands), upgraded Soraka (League of Legends), and a secret for now.
WHERE CAN PEOPLE FIND YOUR COSPLAYS?
People can find and follow my cosplays on only Instagram and Tiktok for now! (photo by it.is.cosplay)
Please remember I do not own any of these pictures and the opinions in this survey belong to the interviewee.
