Happy Hump Day, I’m excited to introduce another imaginative cosplayer.
Hi, what should we call you?
My main username online is Digital Surgeon, or for cosplay it’s Digital Surgeon Cosplay.
What is your favourite beverage?
I appreciate a good cup of tea, but I’m also partial to a bottle of cider, a nice cocktail or just a cold glass of cola.
When did you start cosplaying?
About 3 or 4 years ago, my first outfit (Roman Torchwick) was bought for me as a birthday present.
Why did you start cosplaying?
I’ve admired the cosplay scene for a long time. The idea of being able to capture the image of the characters I adore seemed too enticing to ignore. I finally gathered up the courage to pursue that dream and I couldn’t have been happier.
Who are your cosplay idols?
I’m not too well-versed when it comes to famous cosplayers or the like, but I admire almost anyone who cosplays because of the sheer amount of work and/or passion that goes into the hobby.
What types of cosplay do you do?
Mostly a mixture of anime and videogames, with the two crossing over quite often. I also cosplay original characters, mostly derived from a LARP I attend though they now inhabit their own universes.
What are your favorite cosplays?
From others that I have seen, I adore the entire group of Pokemon cosplayers I’ve met with several times at MCM London. From my fellow Team Skull Grunts, to Giovanni, the highly detailed Pokemon Gijinka (humanised Pokemon) and all the others, I love all of it. Outside of this, I adore the first cosplay of my friend who goes by The Winter-Dullahan Cosplay. Seeing them in their first cosplay as Sebastian Michaelis, I was so proud to see them so happy and so confident.
What is something you want to cosplay but probably never will?
There’s so many characters I’d love to cosplay that I’ll probably never a reason to follow through on. There’s a fair few as well that I’d love to cosplay but there’s someone more interesting from the source material that I’d rather cosplay instead. For example, I’d be interested in cosplayer Peke Pekoyama from Danganronpa, but I’m putting my focus on Gundham Tanaka instead.
Do you make or buy your cosplays?
It’s been a mixture so far. I’m not especially skilled in crafting and sewing plus I’m running on a low budget for the time being so I tend to buy most of the separate pieces. Then, I either make some of the smaller accessories to finish it off or make small additions/alterations to some clothing pieces. I do aspire to practice crafting and sewing in the near future as I would like to create my own unique outfits that I can be proud of.
What do you love about cosplay?
So many things! I’d say being able to transform into someone else is one the greatest feelings of the whole experience for me. Since I struggle with my identity, this allows me to adopt the identity of a character with whom I feel a connection. I also highly appreciate the art of the craft that goes of the creation of many cosplayers. The community is also so wonderful, I’ve met so many amazing people who share the same passions as I do.
What is the most difficult thing for you about cosplay?
Budgeting my outfits carefully since I don’t have a huge amount of money.
Who is your favorite character to cosplay?
This tends to change overtime. It used to be Roman Torchwick, as I loved parading around as my favourite RWBY villain, whilst gaining recognition among the Rooster Teeth community. However, since I’ve retired the character for now I’d probably say Team Skull Grunt. I connect with Team Skull so much, so when I’m in my gear I fully embody the skull spirit!
If you could live in any fantasy world, where would you go?
Tough question. I have two answers for this one. It would be either the world of Pokemon, since I grew up with the franchise and I’ve always dreamed of having my own team, my own journey. That or the world of Remnant in RWBY, because there’s something immensely cool about training to be a hunter with my own unique power and customised weapon.
Where do you get your inspiration for your cosplays?
Mostly from finding a character I really like or identify with. From here I compile a huge list of ideas then choose what is relevant to my current cosplay situation and needs.
What are your “fandoms”?
I’m involved in a large number of fandoms, but the ones I’m currently most involved in are Rooster Teeth/RWBY, Pokemon, Danganronpa, Juuni Taisen and My Hero Academia. Other than that you can probably count anime in general.
What is something you wish beginning cosplayers knew?
Just how expensive it is, but also how much more confident it can make you.
What tips/tricks do you have for other cosplayers?
Always make sure you’re well hydrated in warm outfits and wear sensible shoes. I’ve made the horrible mistake of wearing the wrong shoes and receiving foot pain early in the day as a result.
What is something you wish non-cosplayers knew?
That it isn’t just an expensive hobby where people waste money on ‘dressing up’. From experience I know that cosplay has helped many socially awkward or anxious people open up by embodying characters that they love and finding other people who feel the same. Also, I’d like them to understand the sheer amount of creativity and work that goes into many of the outfits.
What cosplays are you working on?
Currently I’m working on gathering the pieces for Gundam Tanaka, the Supreme Overlord of Ice himself, as part of a group Danganronpa cosplay.
Though I’ve yet to finalise the list, some of my other upcoming projects will include Nezumi (Juuni Taisen) for which I’m attempting to gather the rest of the characters, Seto Kaiba (Yu-Gi-Oh) which was voted for by followers, Tomura Shigaraki (My Hero Academia) for something creative, Griswold Marrow (an original character) which is just a personal fun idea for Halloween and Tyrian Callows (RWBY) who is replacing Roman Torchwick as my Primary Rooster Teeth cosplay.
I’m looking to expand on the list but I’m undecided on what to choose at the moment.
What cosplays do you want to do if money and time were no object?
My dream cosplay is Orendi from Battleborn. Her outfit is very complex, not including the extra arms she has, so the majority of it will need to be custom made.
Where can people find your cosplays?
You can look me up and Digital Surgeon Cosplay on Facebook. I’m planning to set up a YouTube channel which may involve some cosplay elements at my Digital Surgeon handle as well, so I’ll be posting updates about that on my page too.
Please remember I do not own any of these pictures and the opinions in this survey belong to the interviewee.
