WHAT IS YOUR NAME?
@ecoduo_cosplay on Instgram
TELL ME A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELF.
HI! I’m Ecoduo_cosplay. I am a college student studying Environmental Science and Animal Biology. My ultimate career goal is to do research in Antarctica and be a certified scuba diver. Right now, I spend a lot of time studying, making cosplays, and working as a Resident Assistant on my college campus. My amazing boyfriend also enjoys doing couple cosplays with me, he also does photography, so he takes most of my cosplay photos. He is also a college student who is studying ecology.
WHEN DID YOU START COSPLAYING?
I started cosplaying on July 20th, 2018 so I am still rather new to cosplaying. But I’m learning new things every day such as teaching myself how to sew and my boyfriend is learning how to use a DSLR camera.
WHY DO YOU COSPLAY?
As a little kid I always loved Halloween because I could dress up as any character I wanted and just have fun for the whole night. I also enjoy doing hands-on projects which got me interested into prop making. I never really know cosplaying was a thing until one of my friends attended a convention. I saw all the amazing photos, videos, and unique cosplays and became very interested. Cosplaying have given me a way to combine my interests while also giving me the ability to cosplay characters I love.
WHO ARE YOUR COSPLAY IDOLS?
@ModeratlyOkayCosplay on Instagram is an amazing cosplayer and super nice too! I had the opportunity to meet him at a convention this year and I was amazed as how helpful and supportive he was of my cosplays. His amazing cosplays always inspire me to try new things and work hard.
WHAT TYPES OF COSPLAY DO YOU DO?
So far, I have mostly done Anime cosplays because there are too many amazing characters to choose from. However, I am working on branching out and trying new cosplays such as Belle from Beauty and The Beast, and hopefully The Winter Soldier from Captain America.
WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE COSPLAYS?
I really love all the characters I cosplay, but I definitely feel like I connect to certain characters more than others. My favorite cosplay right now is Maka Albarn from Soul Eater. I am so proud of how the scythe, shoes, and coat turned out! I feel like I connect with her character and I love how badass but caring her character is. I also have a special place in my heart for my first cosplay as Juuzou Suzuya from Tokyo Ghoul. I remember spending hours trying to build the scythe and painting the suspenders. I can’t wait to add more of my cosplays to this list!
WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU WANT TO COSPLAY BUT PROBABLY NEVER WILL?
Gamora from Guardians of the Galaxy
DO YOU MAKE, BUY, OR SPECIAL ORDER YOUR COSPLAYS?
I try to make as much as I can because I fell prouder of the finished cosplay because of all the time I put into it. But if It is easier to just buy something because of cost and skill level, then I will buy it.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT COSPLAY?
Cosplaying give me a chance to express my geeky side and have fun with other people who are passionate about their fandoms. I love being able to make props and clothes from tv shows and games.
WHAT IS THE MOST DIFFICULT THING FOR YOU ABOUT COSPLAY?
For sure money, since I’m in college I really have to budget my money to make sure I can pay for tuition and other college fees. Also, cosplaying can take up a ton of time and for me right now college comes first. I can’t wait to devote more time to cosplaying in the future.
WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE CHARACTER TO COSPLAY?
Probably Maka Albarn. She is such a badass meister but is also very sweet. I also really like her outfit and the scythe.
WHERE DO YOU GET YOUR INSPIRATION FOR YOUR COSPLAYS?
I mainly get my inspiration by watching animes or playing games based on the anime.
WHAT ARE YOUR “FANDOMS”?
- Tokyo Ghoul
- Attack on Titan
- Soul Eater
- Marvel Universe
WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU WISH BEGINNING COSPLAYERS KNEW?
You may look up cosplays on social media and see a ton of professional photos with cosplays who have these amazing cosplays. Don’t be discouraged! Being a cosplayer doesn’t mean you have to spend a ton of money on photographers if you don’t want to, and skills such as foam crafting and sewing takes a long time to master. As long as you are having fun while cosplaying then that’s awesome! I started cosplaying with no knowledge on how to sew, use foam, cut wigs, or even how to use makeup. Now I’m learning how to do all of that, and I’ve even made plenty of mistakes along the way. Always keep learning and loving what you do 😊.
WHAT TIPS OR TRICKS DO YOU HAVE FOR OTHER COSPLAYERS?
Shop at goodwill! You can always find unique clothing items or shoes and modify them for cosplays, and everything is priced down too.
If you are trying to make spikes in a wig. First hold of the hair you want to spike and do two light sprays with the hair spray (I recommend the Got2B hairspray) then put a tiny bit of tacky glue at the point of the spike. This will create a perfect point for your spike!
WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU WISH NON-COSPLAYERS KNEW?
Although cosplaying may seem wired and a waste of money its honestly such a fun thing to do.
WHAT COSPLAYS ARE YOU WORKING ON?
I am currently working on Belle from Beauty and the Beast, Kyoko Kirigiri from Danganronpa Trigger Happy Havoc, and Lapis Lazuli from Steven Universe.
WHAT COSPLAYS DO YOU WANT TO DO IF MONEY AND TIME WERE NO OBJECT?
I would love to make Halo armor for my boyfriend because that is his favorite game. I would also love to make the yellow ball dress for Belle. She was my favorite princess growing up and the dress is beautiful.
