Weirdies Supporting Weirdies!

Cosplayer Spotlight – Emily

Welcome to another week! I really enjoyed getting to know this adorable Cosplayer. She has some great insights. Enjoy!

Hi! What should we call you?

Emily or @emily.j.cosplay

When did you start cosplaying?

I started in the beginning of 2015, when I attended as a volunteer for a comic convention called “Copenhagen Comics”.

Why did you start cosplaying?

I’ve always loved the idea of costuming and fashion. I’ve always loved fashion, makeup and the idea of styling. Also, as a kid I loved dressing up at Halloween and having specific themes at my birthday parties. So I’ve always liked the idea of being someone I wasn’t for a minute. When I got older I fell in love with comics and superheroes. So when I attended the convention is was basically just to buy comics and interview artist. But then I had my meeting with the cosplayers, and I fell in love. I instantly knew, that this was what I wanted to do.

Who are your cosplay idols?

Amber Arden, Maid of Might, @nordballe. And I also get inspiration from drag queens like Adore Delano, Pearl and Aja. I do glamour and girly, while also not being afraid to be edgy.

What types of cosplay do you do?

I love mixing with genres. I don’t want to be labeled as the “disney-cosplayer” or the “superhero-cosplayer”. I wanna be versatile and show that I can be a princess, a super hero, a villain, a gaming character and an anime character. I have so much love for the different types of genres and universes that exists. I can’t just pick one type of cosplay, because I do them all.

What are your favorite cosplays?

Anything that’s big and showy. I’m known for my disney cosplays because I love doing catchy makeup, hairstyles and I love a big gown.

What is something you want to cosplay but probably never will?

I want to do a big League of Legends armor. I’ve seen so many legendary videos from LoL conventions, and I’m just gagging over the amazing armors that people have made.

What do you love about cosplay?

I love that I can be someone else for a while, and in the end of the day, take it all off and be myself. Also, I love that there’s so much love around cosplayers. Every time I go to cons, I feel the love of other cosplayers, and it’s just amazing, ’cause I get so many compliments and a home-feeling from people I dont even know.

What is the most difficult thing for you about cosplay?

I don’t sew, sadly. I’d love to try, but I’m not near good at it. I craft accessories, paint and do occasionally do some stitches by hand. But I buy my cosplays, and have people to make them for me. And it’s not always easy, ’cause it can get expensive in the end. And I dont have that much money, so everything I do, has to be on a budget.

Who is your favorite character to cosplay?

I’m most known for my Snow White; she was the first character I cosplayed, so she’ll always have a special place in my heart. But I also love doing Sailor Mercury and BatGirl.

Where do you get your inspiration for your cosplays?

I use all my sparetime watching RuPauls Drag Race. I watch it when I draw, sew, paint, eat, do my makeup, style wigs etc. The makeup and fashion sense in that program gives me inspiration to makeup looks for my cosplays, they give me tips on sewing, styling and projecting myself.

Also, I’m a part of different cosplay groups; Disney, DC, Birds of Prey, Sailor Moon, League of Legends etc., and I get inspired by my friends all the time. They’re all so amazing and creative, and I love them all so much.

What are your “fandoms”?

I used to be very into Marvel, but now I’m more of a DC girl. I’m well known for my Bat Girl, and I absolutely adore her. My goal is to own all of her known outfits. I’m also quite new to the Sailor Moon fandom, and I’m already 1000% hooked. I love the style, characters and storyline. I honestly can’t find any flaws about that show and that fandom – I wanna cosplay all of the characters.

What is something you wish beginning cosplayers knew?

Be more open at cons. I used to be shy when I started cosplaying. And the minute I opened up and welcomed people into my life, my cosplay-social life expanded. And now I have so many friends from all over the world, who loves what I do. As soon as you stop taking yourself so seriously in cosplay, the more fun you’ll have, and more welcoming you’ll be.

What tips do you have for other cosplayers?

If you’re sewing, painting or decorating a cosplay, and it isn’t working out as you want it to be. Don’t panic and get frustrated. Let it sit, take a breather and continue when you’re more relaxed.

What is something you wish non-cosplayers knew?

Cosplay is NOT consent. Just because there are someone out there, being nude, showing genitals and giving cosplay a bad name, doesn’t mean we all do it.

What cosplays are you working on?

Suicide Squad’s Harley Quinn in her golden datenight outfit. I’m finishing up my Sailor Mercury Cosplay. Super Star Ahri from League of Legends. And some finishing touches on my Bat Girl.

What cosplays do you want to do if money/time were no object?

I’d love to get a huge Cinderella gown – the biggest! With sparkles, embroidery and 10 layers of underskirts. Or else I’d get a fierce armor with weapons and special effects.
