Cosplayer Spotlight – Eric Bailey

We have made it to Hump Day people!!! And you know what that means…another cosplayer interview! I opened you enjoy meeting this cosplayer as much as I did.

WHAT IS YOUR NAME?

My name is Eric Bailey and I’m only on Instagram @etb785

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE BEVERAGE?

Favorite beverage is definitely root beer, I don’t know how I came to find it but I’ll drink any type of root beer nonstop if you let me

TELL ME A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELF.

I’m currently a college student going for pre med, mostly to be a cardiologist (hopefully haha). I work part time at a local grocery store and like most younger people, video games are a huge part of my life. I just turned 20 so let’s see how these next few years play out haha

WHEN DID YOU START COSPLAYING?

I started cosplaying in September of 2016 so I’m still fairly new at this. However, I’ve grown to love it and it is a good chunk of my life now. In the about 2 years that I’ve been part of this community, I’ve made many new friends and I can’t thank them enough for being there for me. I’ve been growing at a slow constant but it’s not about the numbers really, it’s just if I’m making people happy.

WHY DO YOU COSPLAY?

I started cosplay mostly for more of a selfish reason. I always liked Marvel and Deadpool was always my favorite. I don’t know why but one day I decided that I just want a really awesome costume. After about a month though, I’ve gotten a lot of attention on my Instagram about my Deadpool cosplay and realized there’s a whole community that do this too. I started getting other cosplays and I still can’t stop haha. It’s now evolved to where I cosplay not for myself but for others. I love seeing people’s faces and reactions to all the costumes people wear at cons. The kids love it too and it’s just a great feeling that these kids think you’re the real person and they love you. It’s like I helped make their dream come true. I even aided once in an anti-bullying campaign and I want to do more campaigns and charity events because of this.

WHO ARE YOUR COSPLAY IDOLS?

My idols are all found on Instagram as well. After I got into the community, a few popular cosplayers just struck me with an awesome factor. Woodstock Spider-Man (@woodstock_spiderman) started to get me into my Spider-Man cosplays. Old Fashioned Nerd (@oldfashionednerd) was also a big inspiration, he does a lot of DC and I’ve yet to but I just love his variety. Also, because of cosplay, I met one of my favorite YouTubers Armin (@arminies) who talks marvel and is also a cosplayer, huge geek out moment. And finally a bunch of accounts like @g.i_jew , @hauntedcosplay , @rottenartist and @starcaliburcosplay have also played a huge role in my cosplay persona. They’re all such amazing friends and it proves that numbers aren’t everything.

WHAT TYPES OF COSPLAY DO YOU DO?

I’ve only done Superhero and Video Game cosplays so far. So far too, only Marvel and then Overwatch cosplays since they both influenced my life. However would love to branch out more into other games and even anime even though I haven’t watched an anime yet haha.

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE COSPLAYS?

My favorite cosplay has to be my Deadpool. Being my first and one of my favorite characters, it holds a very special place in my heart. Even after meeting Rob Liefeld, the creator of Deadpool, it makes it even sweeter. My other favorites though is my Infinity War Spider-Man, I love playing as Peter Parker. My Spider-Man Noir is also really awesome, mostly cause it’s such an unpopular look, I like bringing it to life for more people to see.

WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU WANT TO COSPLAY BUT PROBABLY NEVER WILL?

I would love to do an Archangel cosplay but the wings would have to be massive and I don’t know if I could ever do that. The size and cost would probably be crazy. I’d also love to do a Venom cosplay, I’m just way too small for that haha, I wanna be somewhat accurate when I cosplay and there’s just no way I could bulk up that much.

DO YOU MAKE, BUY, OR SPECIAL ORDER YOUR COSPLAYS?

I’ve bought everything so far. I’ve tried to make Spider-Man masks but it’s just never close to what it should look like haha. I want to learn though, to see if I could make a cosplay sometime. Or even a part of a cosplay.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT COSPLAY?

I just love the feeling you get going out to cons and seeing people’s reactions. It’s so good to know that people appreciate what I do and that it brings a smile to their faces.

WHAT IS THE MOST DIFFICULT THING FOR YOU ABOUT COSPLAY?

Most difficult thing by far, and I’d assume for many cosplayers, is money haha. It’s not cheap at all really. I want to do so much but just can’t afford it, especially only working part time and going to college. Money holds me back from a lot.

WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE CHARACTER TO COSPLAY?

Deadpool haha, still had to be. I get to act all crazy and funny and laugh. I don’t have to play a serious character. It’s great cause I can be more like myself haha. I can be all funny and make other people laugh. I love to act like him and letting people take my props and use them against me, it’s just a great time whenever I put that suit on.

IF YOU COULD LIVE IN OR VISIT ANY FANTASY WORLD, WHERE WOULD YOU GO?

Definitely the base marvel universe. Still preferably the comic one just because if how developed it is. I’d obviously love to be a hero in that world but even as a person, just to know there’s super powered people around me, that powers exist, would just be amazing. And to be fair, I’d want to live in the Overwatch universe for a bit too on the newly formed Overwatch team haha.

WHERE DO YOU GET YOUR INSPIRATION FOR YOUR COSPLAYS?

I get inspiration from other people and then the comics and games. Stan Lee worked miracles and I love his characters. He made them relatable, someone that could really exist. That I could be that someone maybe. I’m also inspired by the cosplay community in general because they’re all so open to any idea you have, the best rule about cosplay is that there are no rules.

WHAT ARE YOUR “FANDOMS”?

I’ve never really dived into fandoms much to be completely honest. What I get is a bunch of people that all like the same universe or topic and write about and make their own stories. I’ve always thought about ideas of storylines in the MCU but I’ve never went as far as to even tell anyone else about them.

WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU WISH BEGINNING COSPLAYERS KNEW?

That you should never get frustrated and don’t pour so much money into it if you can’t afford it. Cosplay is a hobby, not a lifestyle, it can’t have influences on your lifestyle but, family and real world responsibilities come first. Also, that you don’t need to judge by your follower count or like count or even your comment count, if you enjoy it, then keep doing it. Just because your second cosplay of yours didn’t do as well as your first doesn’t mean that it’s a bad cosplay. People do enjoy it, just do what you want.

WHAT TIPS OR TRICKS DO YOU HAVE FOR OTHER COSPLAYERS?

Best tip and tricks, for Instagram handles at least, if you bought anything, tag everyone that was involved. Even if someone made a belt, tag them. They deserve the publicity and it can also help you. They may even feature you which gives you more exposure. Big companies like RPC Studio (@therpcstudio) do shoutouts if you have their suit and that can really help. I’ve been feature three times by them and every time I’ve gotten many more follows from that. It’s a nice tip for exposure. Tag fan pages too. You can also have 30 hashtags per post, definitely use them all. Use anything relative to your post so when people search that hashtag they may see you and like you and drop a follow and a few likes. I’d also encourage asking a question in your post. It seems weird but the more comments you have also improves instagrams algorithm and also helps with more exposure. And finally, go out! Go to conventions around you and take pictures with people and tag them when you post it. Get your name out there so people recognize you, “Hey! You’re that Deadpool we saw at the last con!” It’s a great feeling!

WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU WISH NON-COSPLAYERS KNEW?

Only thing I want non-cosplayers to know is that we do this for our own reasons. Many people hate, that’s how life is. But it’s our hobby, it’s what makes us happy. We feel good doing this. It’s not a waste of money. Everyone has their thing, if it’s working on trucks or golfing. It’s all a hobby, they’re not cheap. There’s no need for toxicity.

WHAT COSPLAYS ARE YOU WORKING ON?

I always have so many in the works. I have a few that are just thoughts and I have a few where I have parts of it. Currently, I’m actually working on my first Cross Gender cosplay! I’m really excited to try it out, I’m working on doing D.Va from Overwatch and just need the base suit and it’s done! I’m also working on Killmonger from the MCU in the Golden Jaguar suit. Also just missing the suit for that. And finally I just need the mask for the Homemade suit Spider-Man wears in Homecoming! Plans that I have that I don’t have any pieces yet is actually Carnage which I plan to purchase late January to hopefully debut mid February. I’m also planning on Darkhawk but I have no progress or idea when that would happen and also the same with a Fantomex cosplay. I do have the print but I need the jacket and belt. I do have the weapons and holsters. I’m super excited for those!

WHAT COSPLAYS DO YOU WANT TO DO IF MONEY AND TIME WERE NO OBJECT?

I’d want to, even though I said it would probably never happen, is a Venom cosplay. I’d need a huge muscle suit and an awesome helmet but that would be a dream. Another dream would be another Deadpool cosplay but by Professional Cosplay (@professionalcosplay along with @el_fett) which is literally movie accurate but nearly $6k haha. I’d also love to do an Iron Man or Ultron cosplay, but it’s super expensive and probably a million pieces haha. Lastly, a cosplay I’ve never seen, would be Dormammu, the classic comic one with the fire and not the MCU more Cosmic one. That would be sweet.

WHERE CAN PEOPLE FIND YOUR COSPLAYS?

You could find my cosplays on my Instagram page @etb785 and see how I progress and eventually debut those previously mentioned cosplays! I post semi-regularly haha.

That’s if you’re far away from me, but if you’d want to meet me in person I’m a Connecticut based cosplayer so I am at all Connecticut Comicons! This means Connecticut Comicon, ConnectiCon and Terfficon! I also travel around a bit, I go to Rhode Island for RICC, Massachusetts for Boston Con and Anime Boston, New York for NYCC and Big Apple Con. And I’m planning to go into New Jersey this year! I will usually be there on Saturday’s for the entire day! You could always dm me on Instagram and talk to find out when I’ll be there and if you’d want to  meet up!

Are you open to talking and helping people out?

That’s a big yes! If you have any questions for me you can always dm me on Instagram @etb785 and I’d love to help beginners or even seniors at cosplaying. I’d say I’m still a but of a noob at this but I can help point in the right direction. I know great companies that also have great prices to help make some of your cosplays come true! I’m in good with a few that I may even be able to help you get something custom made! But I always down to talk, I’ll be there for advice or venting or new friends, whatever you need I can try to help!

Hope to see some of you all at a con someday or on my page! Much love.

Please remember I do not own any of these pictures and the opinions in this survey belong to the interviewee.
