Hump day everyone! This splayed will give you the energy you need for the rest of the week.
WHAT IS YOUR NAME?
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE BEVERAGE?
Dr. Pepper and sweet tea (southerner here gotta have the tea haha)
TELL ME A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELF.
I am a director for a news station but I let my weeb side come out every now and then (I’ve came in cosplay once with them confused). I also stream on the side when I get free time to enjoy the games I love.
WHEN DID YOU START COSPLAYING?
I started cosplaying after my highschool group got to go to Hamacon when I was in 9th grade. From there I worked hard on making my first cosplay piece of Roy Mustang from FMA and won Best Manga cosplay.
WHY DO YOU COSPLAY?
I cosplay because it’s an expression of what I love. I see the characters and think ,”Wow, that’s empowering.” Or simply, “Wow, that’s cool…I wanna wear it”
WHO ARE YOUR COSPLAY IDOLS?
Easily the people who helped inspire me to keep going in this hobby. My highschool friend @theupsidedowngirl kept me going through highschool and college with her work. Then when I moved after college @hashtag_cosplay, @ligerzero459, and @niressecosplay kept me encouraged that cosplay was alive and well at people my age and in different parts of the country.
WHAT TYPES OF COSPLAY DO YOU DO?
I do every bit of cosplay. I’ve done a weeping angel from Doctor Who, Akira from Persona 5, a splicer from Bioshock, and even dabbled in some crossplay as Toga from My Hero Academia. There’s a lot more as well than I can list here but almost every genre has been covered with more to come haha.
WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE COSPLAYS?
Toga is my all time favorite. I didn’t think I would enjoy crossplay but after watching a panel about it, I got the confidence to just try it out. A second favorite would have to be Zuko from the Last Airbender as I love his character design and the clothes are really comfy haha.
WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU WANT TO COSPLAY BUT PROBABLY NEVER WILL?
Big huge armor builds. I see these monster hunter builds and gush how amazing they are but my expertise lies in latex and makeup so armor building is a little out of my league at the moment. But practice makes perfect so not entirely impossible!
DO YOU MAKE, BUY, OR SPECIAL ORDER YOUR COSPLAYS?
I do all of the above. I’m in the process of making more of my cosplays as I want to get better. If its an extravagant piece I usually order. Also, closet cosplays are so easy when you just stop and imagine the possibilities of what the character might wear.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT COSPLAY?
I love the ability to express myself and the love for the characters. I also love seeing the reactions on people’s faces of seeing their favorite character brought to life. I remember when I cosplayed Dabi the first time he appeared and everyone said, “OH my god, he’s my favorite character.” That ability to make someone smile when they might be having a down day always makes me smile and feel good
WHAT IS THE MOST DIFFICULT THING FOR YOU ABOUT COSPLAY?
The most difficult thing about cosplay is the time for trial and error. You have to accept that you will mess up and your projects won’t be perfect the first time around. I’ve repeatedly redone my cosplays to make them better and better each time and I know there is always room for improvement. Keep positive and keep trying is what I say.
WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE CHARACTER TO COSPLAY?
Still gotta be Toga. I love her bubbly, murderous attitude and the outfit completes that. A big plus to seeing reactions when people find out I’m a guy wearing a school uniform haha.
IF YOU COULD LIVE IN OR VISIT ANY FANTASY WORLD, WHERE WOULD YOU GO?
Oof a real hard one with all the fandoms I’m in. I would love to live in the world of Fullmetal Alchemist. The vibe of steampunk and magic would be very convenient and I’d love to experiment with what powers I could muster up.
WHERE DO YOU GET YOUR INSPIRATION FOR YOUR COSPLAYS?
When I first look at a character, I think, what can I do to improve on this look or how can I make this practical.
WHAT ARE YOUR “FANDOMS”?
Well we got anime of course (lets just say a lot of them), league of legends, Doctor Who, Merlin, Voltron, and a couple dozen others that escape me right now. Don’t worry, I could talk a storm about any fandom really I’ve watched so many shows.
WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU WISH BEGINNING COSPLAYERS KNEW?
Don’t listen to the haters. People are going to be rude, yes. Don’t be discouraged when they climb out of the woodwork saying you’re trash. You did your best, you’re happy with your work, you’re amazing.
WHAT TIPS OR TRICKS DO YOU HAVE FOR OTHER COSPLAYERS?
Be courteous in the community. I’ve seen so much toxicity in the year I’ve been heavy in the cosplay community. There is no need for this unwanted anger and hate towards people you may have never met. Let’s set aside differences and be friends in a hobby that we all love.
WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU WISH NON-COSPLAYERS KNEW?
We aren’t all weird I promise haha. Just get to know us and don’t freak out after seeing the dozen wig heads and piles of makeup and costumes in the closets.
WHAT COSPLAYS ARE YOU WORKING ON?
Oof lets see…Bill Cipher, Mettaton, Robin (Fire Emblem), Iida (MHA), and a few more that I have components for but haven’t really dug into yet.
WHAT COSPLAYS DO YOU WANT TO DO IF MONEY AND TIME WERE NO OBJECT?
If money and time were not an object at all? Lemme get a full mech suit of Evangelion 01 please! I love Evangelion but I don’t like wearing body suit like the uniforms in the show so I wanna be a giant robot.
WHERE CAN PEOPLE FIND YOUR COSPLAYS?
You can find my cosplays at @familiarwayside on Instagram and Familiar Wayside on Facebook!
Do you have too many cosplays?
Simply, not enough haha.
Please remember I do not own any of these pictures and the opinions in this survey belong to the interviewee.
