Weirdies Supporting Weirdies!

Cosplayer Spotlight – Gem

One of my favorite shows is Stranger Things. And this cosplayer is by far the best Joyce Cosplayer I’ve ever seen.

WHAT IS YOUR NAME?

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE BEVERAGE?

I wouldn’t be able to function without my first coffee in the morning!

WHEN DID YOU START COSPLAYING?

My first cosplay was at one of the Collectormania’s in Milton Keynes as Alex Drake from Ashes to Ashes.

WHY DO YOU COSPLAY?

I think in part in comes from loving the opportunity to dress and pretend to be someone else for a day. I always enjoyed dressing up as a child in school plays. I also love the creative aspect of it and trying to find costume pieces that are as similar as possible, although this can also be one of the most stressful parts!

WHAT TYPES OF COSPLAY DO YOU DO?

I’ve always cosplayed as some of my favourite TV characters including Alex Drake, Irene Adler (BBC Sherlock), Norma Bates and Joyce Byers.

WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU WANT TO COSPLAY BUT PROBABLY NEVER WILL?

I once tried to cosplay as Dana Scully, but unfortunately it’s still difficult to find a realistic red wig that looks natural. I also have a couple of characters who I could probably never cosplay as the shows are very niche crime dramas and I think their clothes are too similar to what I would wear for work!

DO YOU MAKE, BUY, OR SPECIAL ORDER YOUR COSPLAYS?

Sometimes I buy the clothes, like the Sherlock coat. I am also incredibly lucky as I own some genuine costume pieces worn by Keeley Hawes as Alex Drake, so I have worn some of these for cosplay. Sometimes the costume pieces have been made if I can’t find anything similar. My current cosplay work in progress is probably going to be a combination of bought and customised, but that project is top secret!

WHAT IS THE MOST DIFFICULT THING FOR YOU ABOUT COSPLAY?

The most difficult thing for me is trying to find similar or exact costume pieces. This can be the most stressful part of cosplay for me, but it is the most rewarding when you find what you’re looking for!

Who is your favorite character to cosplay?

Honesty, I’ve loved all the characters I’ve cosplayed. Certainly the most comfortable for me has to be Joyce Byers, bless that woman and her love of trainers!

Where do you get your inspiration for your cosplays?

My cosplays are always of characters that I love and it helps when they all have amazing wardrobes!

WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU WISH BEGINNING COSPLAYERS KNEW?

I think sometimes beginner cosplayers can feel nervous, but I would say to just have fun with it, maybe even put your own spin on a character. You also don’t need to spend a fortune on your costume. The cosplay community is incredibly supportive and they shouldn’t take notice of those who are not.

WHAT COSPLAYS DO YOU WANT TO DO IF MONEY AND TIME WERE NO OBJECT?

If money were no object, then I would love to do some location shoots as Joyce Byers in America, but I’m a UK based cosplayer.

WHERE CAN PEOPLE FIND YOUR COSPLAYS?

I’m trying to post more cosplay photos on my Instagram account, but I also attend the occasional convention with my next one in October!

Please remember I do not own any of these pictures and the opinions in this survey belong to the interviewee.
