Buckle up class! This cosplayer is one of my favorite characters ever! As soon as I saw her I had to interview her. I hope you enjoy getting to know her as much as I did!
WHAT IS YOUR NAME?
Moiya McTier @GoAstroMo
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE BEVERAGE?
Any sort of cranberry juice mixture
But a close second is a root beer float after the ice cream has melted so the whole thing is really creamy.
TELL ME A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELF.
I grew up in a log cabin in the middle of the woods in Pennsylvania without running water. Now I’m an astrophysicist living in New York City! I definitely couldn’t have imagined that this would be my life 10 years ago.
I study planets outside of our solar system — we call them “exoplanets” — and I’m trying to figure out if there are places in the galaxy where habitable planets are most likely to form. I also give a lot of public talks about my science around New York.
When I’m not working, I love to read (almost exclusively fantasy books), cook, and craft (a lot of metal working and wood burning lately)!
WHEN DID YOU START COSPLAYING?
I cosplayed for the first time at Wakandacon in Chicago in July 2019. I’ve always been really serious about my Halloween costumes and I’d always thought cosplay was really interesting, but never had the time or money to make it to an actual convention. I probably wouldn’t have gone to Wakandacon if I hadn’t been invited to speak on one of their panels. Now I’m really looking forward to cosplaying again!
WHY DO YOU COSPLAY?
I cosplayed as Miss Frizzle from the Magic School Bus at Wakandacon. It was great seeing how people reacted to seeing such an iconic figure from their childhoods! I don’t think this counts as official cosplay, but my last two Halloween costumes were Gamora from Guardians of the Galaxy and Missy from Big Mouth. I got really into both of those costumes, painting my skin green and putting in fake braces that chafed my gums.
WHO ARE YOUR COSPLAY IDOLS?
I don’t really know anything about the cosplay community, so I can’t name any specific people.
WHAT TYPES OF COSPLAY DO YOU DO?
I cosplaying smart, strong women, regardless of genre. Sometimes those women are teachers from children’s shows like Miss Frizzle, and sometimes they’re badass superheroes like Gamora.
WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU WANT TO COSPLAY BUT PROBABLY NEVER WILL?
When I learned I was going to Wakandacon, I originally wanted to cosplay as Valkyrie from Thor: Ragnarok. Ultimately I didn’t end up doing that because of time constraints, but I’d like to in the future, especially since it was recently released that she would be the first official LGBTQ hero in the Marvel Universe!
DO YOU MAKE, BUY, OR SPECIAL ORDER YOUR COSPLAYS?
I bought my Miss Frizzle dress on Amazon a few years ago for Halloween. I’ve worn it pretty regularly since then when I teach astronomy classes or give public talks.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT COSPLAY?
I absolutely loved the looks on people’s faces when they saw me dressed as Miss Frizzle. They got so excited, like I was bringing them a piece of their childhood. And they were people of all ages. Grown women chased me to ask for a picture and a toddler chanted “Frizzle, Frizzle!” until I gave her a hug 🙂 I loved that my cosplay could make people so happy.
IF YOU COULD LIVE IN OR VISIT ANY FANTASY WORLD, WHERE WOULD YOU GO?
Honestly, there are way too many to choose from! I’ve dreamt of living with the elves in Middle Earth or traveling across Narnia or diving down to the lost city of Atlantis. But who hasn’t? If I had to choose just one, I’d probably choose to visit Daevabad from S.A. Chakraborty’s City of Brass.
WHAT ARE YOUR “FANDOMS”?
I’m a huge Buffy nerd! When trivia games were really popular a few years ago, I was ranked 10th in Pennsylvania for Buffy knowledge. Aside from that, I also stan Xena and all things Neil Gaiman.
WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU WISH BEGINNING COSPLAYERS KNEW?
I wish someone had told me how low the barrier to entry was. I assumed that if I started cosplaying, my first one had to be big and elaborate, but that’s not necessarily the case. My Miss Frizzle costume was a dress, a stuffed lizard, and some shoes, and that was enough! I think a lot more people would cosplay if they knew it didn’t have to be a super intricate thing.
WHAT COSPLAYS DO YOU WANT TO DO IF MONEY AND TIME WERE NO OBJECT?
I really would like to cosplay as Valkyrie from Thor: Ragnarok one day! In all her various glorious and badass forms. I haven’t really thought of any other ideas, but the cosplay future is bright.
As a first-time cosplayer, what surprised you about the experience?
I didn’t realize how freeing it would be to pretend to be someone else. Hundreds of people asked to take pictures of or with me and I was happy to do it, even though most of them didn’t know my real name. All those people were so excited to have my picture in their phones and they’ll only ever know me as Miss Frizzle, and I think that’s pretty cool!
Please remember I do not own any of these pictures and the opinions in this survey belong to the interviewee.
