I hope everyone has had a great week! This cosplayer is a great way to wrap up the week.
WHAT IS YOUR NAME?
Lesley, Les is more, HarleenQuartz Cosplay
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE BEVERAGE?
Homemade lemonade is basically nectar of the gods. I’m also a sucker for a cold Coke.
TELL ME A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELF.
I’m just a small town nerd who was convinced to moved to the city! I’m from northwest ohio originally but moved to the Dayton area summer of 2018 with my son and my long term partner. Our long term goal is to plant our roots in Cincinnati by next year. I am a cosplayer, body positive/self love advocate, and mental health warrior. If I’m not crafting or working on cosplays I can be found at my muggle job as a behavioral therapist, cooking, baking, playing a video game, or honestly sleeping. I’m forever a sleepy girl. I love to have fun, goof off, and am a total con mom. 😂
WHEN DID YOU START COSPLAYING?
So I first heard about cosplaying from a friend who was going to a local con in Ohio, ohayocon. I googled what the con was about and found myself making my first cosplay (spider splicer from bioshock) shortly after. I made my splicer cosplay and debuted it in 2012.
I had so many plans after that, I was addicted to the cosplay community. After that con I took what I call an “unscheduled” break from cosplaying due to an abusive relationship. I returned to cosplay in 2015 and haven’t looked back since.
WHY DO YOU COSPLAY?
To be honest, firstly I do it for me. I do it because I love it. For a long time I was told what to do and how to do things. I was banned from enjoying life basically. I made myself a promise when I returned to the community in 2015 I would cosplay what I wanted by my own rules. I love pushing myself to create new things and giving myself something to work towards. I love the rush of a deadline and being creative under pressure. I also cosplay in hopes of helping others. If someone can see a cosplay I’ve done and say “Hey she cosplayed that character. Why can’t I?” Then my job is done. I want to inspire others no matter who they are, where they come from, or what their size is.
WHO ARE YOUR COSPLAY IDOLS?
Oh geez there are a bunch of them!
Kersleygirl, Supersoniccierra, harleesyn, ivydoomkitty, realkikielise, wickeddwillow, bakamono, courtwithconfidence, thousand_faces cosplay. I could go on and on.
WHAT TYPES OF COSPLAY DO YOU DO?
I’m kind of all over the place. I am a total fandom jumper. Recently I’ve cosplayed characters from game of thrones, DC universe, pokemon, and steven universe. I’m hoping to bring some marvel characters to life this next year.
WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE COSPLAYS?
That’s like asking to pick my favorite child 😭.
I love all my cosplays and this answer changes sometimes but currently it is my sailor rose quartz. It is such an extra cosplay with glitter and sparkle everywhere. I just love it so much. I feel like a princess when wearing her.
My sword used with the cosplay too was such a labor of love and my first time working with plexiglass.
I also have a big place in my heart for my horse heart eater Daneryus Targaryen. I was bullied while wearing that cosplay last year and brought her back for Cincinnati comic expo this year. Being covered in fake blood has never made me feel like such a badass.
WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU WANT TO COSPLAY BUT PROBABLY NEVER WILL?
White diamond from steven universe. I talk a big game about doing it one day but I always put things to do in front of her. Maybe one day.
DO YOU MAKE, BUY, OR SPECIAL ORDER YOUR COSPLAYS?
Kind of a mix. I make what I can and then leave the rest in Amazon’s hands. I hate sewing so if possible I try to ask around first to see if anyone is taking on commissions. I’d much rather spend my money supporting a fellow artist.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT COSPLAY?
I love meeting new people! I love spreading cospositivity and learning about everyone’s journey in this crazy fun community. Cosplay has helped me so much in terms of accepting my body, loving myself, and being open to others.
WHAT IS THE MOST DIFFICULT THING FOR YOU ABOUT COSPLAY?
Being patient and realistic. If I start 2 weeks before the convention on a cosplay I know I’m going to have a bad time stress wise. I need to be realistic in my time and also in my current abilities. Patience is another bad one for me as I am not a patient person at all. I want things to be done asap but of course this isn’t a perfect world. Perfection doesn’t exist.
Who is your favorite character to cosplay?
Harley Quinn for sure. She is so versatile and I connect with her on a personal level. I have bipolar 2 disorder. So sometimes I am very manic feeling, like Harley. Other times I am in a depressive state beating myself up mentally about things, like Harley. I’m not saying the character is bipolar but she has been through a world of craziness but continues to try to smile and goof off. I relate to that a lot.
IF YOU COULD LIVE IN OR VISIT ANY FANTASY WORLD, WHERE WOULD YOU GO?
I’d start my visit in Hogwarts. I love the harry potter universe so much. It’s a fandom that I will always love, it’s gotten me through a lot in life. The universe has so much to offer. Like dragons or mermaids? Harry Potter has your back.
After that I’d stop off at the Shire from Lord of the Rings for lunch and second lunch. I just assume as much as they eat, Hobbits have to be amazing cooks.
WHERE DO YOU GET YOUR INSPIRATION FOR YOUR COSPLAYS?
If I see a character I connect with in any way. I cosplay them. I will dive into the world of pintrest and obsess over the character for a while until I finally decide to gather the materials and create them in my cosplay image. I find inspiration everywhere.
WHAT ARE YOUR “FANDOMS”?
Harry potter, Disney, overwatch, borderlands, bioshock, fallout, steven universe, star wars, fruits basket, elfen lied, my hero academia, fooly cooly, DC universe, MCU, buffy, handmaids tale, scott pilgrim, riverdale, I love Lucy, golden girls, pokemon, mario, DBZ, game of thrones, archer, rick and morty.
Just to name a few.
WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU WISH BEGINNING COSPLAYERS KNEW?
Plan ahead. There is always something that comes up, because life happens. If you’re just starting out and think you need to be making full armor on day one of learning, you don’t. Everyone starts somewhere different and everyone has different abilities. Find your comfort zone, branch out at your own pace.
WHAT TIPS OR TRICKS DO YOU HAVE FOR OTHER COSPLAYERS?
Follow tutorials. If you aren’t familiar with something research it like crazy and find a tutorial.
Also use coupons anytime you go to Joann fabrics. Your wallet will thank you.
WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU WISH NON-COSPLAYERS KNEW?
Cosplay is for everyone. I cannot say that enough. Even you mister “I’m painting my whole body to support my sports team.”
Also never blackface. It’s not cool.
WHAT COSPLAYS ARE YOU WORKING ON?
Currently I’m finishing up an original orc design, bubbles from powerpuff girls, rave girl rapunzel, dapper vaporeon, and new 52 Harley Quinn. Busy busy!
WHAT COSPLAYS DO YOU WANT TO DO IF MONEY AND TIME WERE NO OBJECT?
Brotherhood of steel full armor set from fallout would be so sweet. I really would want to figure out how to put together a big sister or a big daddy with working drill bit from bioshock.
WHERE CAN PEOPLE FIND YOUR COSPLAYS?
On Facebook, Instagram, or any con I attend!
What else do you have for us today?
42. It’s the answer to life. You’re welcome. ❤
