I love this cosplayer’s insights. Her costumes are truly inspired. Don’t forget to follow and like her stuff.
What is your name?
Kira Elric / Kamuiyamato, Kira_elric, KiraElric
I mostly use variations Kira Elric though.
What is your favorite beverage?
Grape Juice. <3 My Mom always used to tease me that I could stick a straw in the pitcher and just drink the whole thing.
When did you start cosplaying?
I started cosplaying in 2000 when I was making Halloween costumes in Middle School. I had Sailor Moon and Vash the Stampede done before I went to my first convention in 2005.
Who are your cosplay idols?
Honestly, I want to say I don’t really have cosplay ‘idols’ because we’re all just nerds in costumes and I don’t like to put people on pedestals. So I’m just gunna say I admire my friends. Karmada Cosplay for one is super good at what she does.
What types of cosplay do you do?
I have a habit of doing a lot of crossplays because I feel more comfortable cosplaying men than I do women and I cosplay a lot more anime than anything else, I do cosplay from video games too though.
What are your favorite cosplays?
Izuku Midoriya, World’s End Dancehall Hatsune Miku, Yuri Lowell, and Luke Fon Fabre are by far my favorites. Yuri and Luke are some of my all time favorite characters, Miku is my pride and Joy, and I just love being Izuku.
What is something you want to cosplay but probably never will?
I don’t want to say this because I really want to cosplay him, but Makenshi from Final Fantasy Unlimited. He’s literally my dream of dream cosplays and I’m so obsessive about everything looking perfect that I just don’t take the time to work on him. Honestly if I just sat down and forced myself to do it, it wouldn’t be hard but I’m so self-conscious of myself I haven’t brought myself to do it yet.
Do you make, buy, or special order your cosplays?
95% of my cosplays I make myself. I’m a mostly self-taught seamstress and I do cosplay commissions for other people so I like to make things for myself too. But lately I’ve been so busy making things for other people that I have caught myself buying my cosplays for certain things I simply don’t have time for and there is nothing wrong with that.
What do you love about cosplay?
Cosplay is an art form in which I can not only create with my hands but I can also pass joy onto other people by simply being a character they love. I love to fool around in character and just joke with people. I love to sew and create and just breathe life into a project. It’s expanded my knowledge in so many areas and given me confidence in so many others. It’s brought me friends, and people I call family and even my husband. It’s such a personal thing for me, I adore it. It’s truly and honestly changed my life.
What is the most difficult thing for you about cosplay?
Unfortunately, there is drama in cosplay now that social media is a part of it for ‘how popular you are’ or ‘how many followers you have’ or ‘this person cosplayed this character better than so and so’ and it really brings me down. Just cosplay to cosplay and have fun, I say!
Who is your favorite character to cosplay?
That’s honestly a really hard question for me to answer because I have so many memories attached to each costume. I love cosplaying Miku because she makes me feel beautiful, but I love cosplaying Luke and Yuri because I feel like myself and I get to connect with everyone else who loves the ‘Tales of’ series of games. But on the same hand I love cosplaying Izuku because it’s so casual for me. I also have really strong memories attached to my Yusei Fudo cosplay because I made so many friends in that costume and it’s how I met my husband and at the same time my husband and I’s “Tiger and Bunny” costumes are so close to me because he proposed in them. It’s really hard for me to decide. I love all the characters I cosplay.
If you could live in or visit any fantasy world, where would you go?
I think I’d have a hard time choose between something from My Hero Academia, Tales Of and Yugioh. Dude if I could chill out in any of those places that would be super cool. I couldn’t live there though, I’d miss my family too much.
Where do you get your inspiration for your cosplays?
The Characters I cosplay are my inspiration. When I pick a ‘muse’ to cosplay, they are normally my everything. I am one to just fall into something head over heels, completely and utterly and I become obsessed with the subject matter. So of course I want to cosplay them because I want to bring them to life and I want the challenge of making their costume.
What are your “fandoms”?
I have too many to count but my main ones are:
Yugioh (All Series), Tales Of, Tiger and Bunny, And My Hero Academia.
What is something you wish beginning cosplayers knew?
Don’t be fooled by the pretty pictures you see online. Everyone starts small. Skill comes with experience and time and sometimes things are made with groups of people. It’s okay to start small, your first cosplay doesn’t have to be jaw dropping. Just have fun with it.
What tips/tricks do you have for other cosplayers?
You can do simple embroidery with a normal sewing machine if you’re patient enough. My World’s End Dancehall is proof of that.
What is something you wish non-cosplayers knew?
Most photos have a lot of editing or awkward posing going into them.
What cosplays are you working on?
I’ve got a bunch of commissions to work on, so I’m working Yukina and Hiei (Yu Yu Hakusho) for a client for Shutocon, and I need to get Suneater (My Hero Academia) for another done by May.
I don’t have anything going for myself right now, but I’m planning a new Hatsune Miku.
What cosplays do you want to do if money/time were no object?
So many costumes. The Miku I’m planning for sure because I’m already trying to budget for that dress. I would make Barnaby Brook Jr.’s Hero outfit from Tiger and Bunny (and Wild Tiger for my husband), and I would completely overhaul our hero costumes for Katsuki Bakugou and Izuku Midoriya. I’d make so many Vocaloid and Tales of costumes too.
What is your favorite Convention?
Youmacon and Dokidokon is gaining ground! I love Youmacon since the first year I went (the year it started) and I want to keep going for years to come. It’s grown so much and I’m so proud to see how far it’s come. I recommend it to everyone!
Where can people find your cosplays?
Please remember I do not own any of these pictures and the opinions in this survey belong to the interviewee.
