Happy Hump Day everyone! I hope everyone is having a great week! What are you working on? Enjoy this epic cosplay interview.
WHAT IS YOUR NAME?
Facebook: Ninabytes Cosplay
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE BEVERAGE?
TELL ME A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELF.
My name is Nina. I was born and raised in Puerto Rico and have been living in Texas for 10 years. I have a BFA in Fashion Design and a BA in psychology. I enjoy playing competitive Smash Bros, and will geek out about any Nintendo franchise.
WHEN DID YOU START COSPLAYING?
I made my first actual cosplay in 2012 but I had been making costumes and clothes since I was very young.
WHY DO YOU COSPLAY?
I cosplay because I love becoming my favorite characters, especially characters I grew up loving. I also cosplay because in doing it, I get to combine all my favorite things: video games, sewing and crafting, dressing up, and make-up.
WHO ARE YOUR COSPLAY IDOLS?
I don’t necessarily idolize other cosplayers, but there are a few cosplayers I truly admire for their craft and some of them are: A Smile and A Song Cosplay, Ginny D, and Raisor Cosplay.
WHAT TYPES OF COSPLAY DO YOU DO?
Mainly video games, but every now and then I’ll get out of my comfort zone and do something random.
WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE COSPLAYS?
My favorite cosplays are Twintelle and Bayonetta because they were the most challenging to complete and at some point I didn’t think I could actually pull them off but I did!
WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU WANT TO COSPLAY BUT PROBABLY NEVER WILL?
My dream cosplay is a full armor varia suit Samus, but I don’t really do armor so I consider it a bit far fetched to ever complete something like it.
DO YOU MAKE, BUY, OR SPECIAL ORDER YOUR COSPLAYS?
I make most of my cosplays, but I do have a couple pieces that I bought pre-made just for the fun of dressing up.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT COSPLAY?
I love that I allows me to have a creative outlet and share that with others that feel the same way about video games, anime, movies, and comics!
WHAT IS THE MOST DIFFICULT THING FOR YOU ABOUT COSPLAY?
The biggest challenge is definitely money. Sometimes it is really difficult to complete things simply because I can’t afford to, and I either put it off for a while until I can afford it, or don’t do it at all. Cosplay is expensive and for most cosplayers it is not profitable at all.
Who is your favorite character to cosplay?
I love cosplaying Zelda. But I’m also in love with most of the characters I have cosplayed.
IF YOU COULD LIVE IN OR VISIT ANY FANTASY WORLD, WHERE WOULD YOU GO?
This is a very difficult question and I can’t just answer one thing. I would love to visit a world of all Nintendo worlds, Hogwarts, and The Shire.
WHERE DO YOU GET YOUR INSPIRATION FOR YOUR COSPLAYS?
Things I really enjoy, especially visually, and characters that I feel resonate with myself.
WHAT ARE YOUR “FANDOMS”?
Nintendo (specifically Smash).
I used to be very dedicated to the Wholock fandom and the Gazette fandom as well, and I still love them, but I am not too involved anymore.
WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU WISH BEGINNING COSPLAYERS KNEW?
AVOID CON CRUNCH!!!!! Con crunch is the dumbest thing ever and there is no reason why anybody should put that much pressure on themselves for a cosplay. Another thing I wish beginning cosplayers knew is to remember to enjoy cosplay for what it is and not try to please others or to gain popularity.
WHAT TIPS OR TRICKS DO YOU HAVE FOR OTHER COSPLAYERS?
Something I would encourage other cosplayers to do is to work together with other cosplayers you are close with. It’s very helpful to work collaboratively with other people. You learn a lot from them, and you grow a lot as a cosplayer when you are able to help others as well.
It’s also really good to stay well organized. For example, have all wigs in one place, hang up your past cosplays, take care of all your pieces because you never know when you’ll want to wear them again.
Keep all your patterns too. These patterns help the process go much quicker when starting to work on any future cosplay that has a similar silhouette or similar pieces..
WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU WISH NON-COSPLAYERS KNEW?
I wish they knew that cosplay is not a childish hobby. It can be a career for some people, or a serious hobby for others that forms real bonds and allows people to be part of a community. It also helps develop skills outside of cosplay, too, like networking and technical skills.
I also wish they knew to not judge something they’re not familiar with and to learn to ask questions rather than jumping to assumptions about cosplay.
WHAT COSPLAYS ARE YOU WORKING ON?
I’m working on Menat from Street Fighter V, KD/A Ahri from League of Legends, Justin Bailey Samus from Metroid, and Shy Gal. These are the cosplays I’m working on in the next couple of months, but I have a lot more planned for the future.
WHAT COSPLAYS DO YOU WANT TO DO IF MONEY AND TIME WERE NO OBJECT?
The full Samus Varia Suit complete with armor and lights. A character from Granblue Fantasy, like Korwa or Nemone.
WHERE CAN PEOPLE FIND YOUR COSPLAYS?
I have a website at https://www.nina-bytes.com
I also post my cosplays on my social media; instagram, twitter, and facebook.
What are your goals in cosplay?
My answer would be to grow and develop my crafting skills and someday get to do things that were too challenging in the past. I also hope to continue to network and meet more people in the community. Someday it would be nice to be considered a professional cosplayer.
