Weirdies Supporting Weirdies!

Cosplayer Spotlight – PondLifeCosplay

Hello Weirdies!!! Welcome to our first Cosplayer interview of 2020!

Iso: WHAT IS YOUR NAME?

Louise or @pondlifecosplay!

Iso: WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE BEVERAGE?

Louise: It depends on what type you mean, hot drinks wise I’ve become a tea drinker in like the last year or so. Fizzy drinks or soft drinks wise I would have to say lemonade or any type of orange/apple juice just because they’re the only thing that go down well in my stomach. alcohol wise, I am a huge fruit cider fan!

Iso: TELL ME A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELF.

Louise: I’m from South Wales, which people don’t instantly recognise because I don’t have the typical accent. I consider myself to be a writer and study English Literature and Creative Writing at university and love working on films with my friends or going to see live music (my favourite band are called Dream State, please go check them out!)

Iso: WHEN DID YOU START COSPLAYING?

Louise: Technically at my first con in 2014, when I cosplayed as Katniss Everdeen from The Hunger Games. But my first proper time that I put all my effort into it was in March 2019 at Cardiff Film and Comic Con when I cosplayed as Amy Pond from the Time of Angels/Flesh and Stone episode of Doctor Who!

Iso: WHY DO YOU COSPLAY?

Louise: I’ve honestly come to love cosplaying because it’s so freeing and fun to just become a fictional character. It separates you from the worries you have as just YOU and you become absorbed in their world. It’s wonderful when you’re cosplaying with others too because then you get to interact with your friends/family/people you meet as your character and they just get it!

Iso: WHO ARE YOUR COSPLAY IDOLS?

Louise: Ahh gosh, there are so many on Instagram! @kiah.papaya.cos, @davis_cosplay, @redheadedchinny96 (and honestly all of his friendship group because like, what a squad!), @comealongpondfire, @raggedymancosplay @songswancosplay @lonelygodcosplay @dyketor_whocosplay @earthgirlcosplay (they’re a bunch of cosplayers from Florida and do such great Doctor Who/Chilling Adventures of Sabrina cosplays), @sinningwolf_cosplay, @tommocosplays (one of my closest cosplayer friends and so artistic, I love her!…there are just too many!

Iso: WHAT TYPES OF COSPLAY DO YOU DO?

Louise: Mainly superhero sci-fi/fantasy tv show/film characters, a LOT of Doctor Who content is on my page if that’s what you’re interested in.

Iso: WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE COSPLAYS?

Louise: Amy Pond! (I just adore her :D) she has such a beautiful wardrobe and so many interesting variants! I have a few other different cosplays but it’s just finding the confidence to bring them out more.

Iso: WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU WANT TO COSPLAY BUT PROBABLY NEVER WILL?

Louise: Maybe Rae from Star Wars? I do like Star Wars but I’m not as invested as some people in the fandom and I’ve heard how expensive the Star Wars cosplays are.

Iso: DO YOU MAKE, BUY, OR SPECIAL ORDER YOUR COSPLAYS?

Louise: I mainly scout around charity shops or cheapish clothes shops for my cosplays with normal-type clothes, I’ve been quite lucky as my boyfriend (@the_whovian_spider, go give him some love!) has already ordered a bunch of cosplays online and passed them on to me to either keep or borrow. I’m not saying that’s the way I go about it, but he has been very generous towards me and I appreciate his help so much.

Iso: WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT COSPLAY?

Louise: Well, as I mentioned about why I cosplay, I love just diving into a fictional character’s world and not having to worry about how I look as myself so much. Plus I get to wear some comfy and stylish things! Obviously it’s still daunting having to pass people in quite obvious cosplay, but at least they are strangers and don’t know who YOU are. Some people might even think you look cool!

Iso: WHAT IS THE MOST DIFFICULT THING FOR YOU ABOUT COSPLAY?

Louise: There are a few things, mainly cost. I am a student and cosplay is EXPENSIVE! But also having the confidence to cosplay things like Spider-Gwen, Captain America in tight suits in public and having people walk past and judge you. There is still a gap with stigma and there will always be that fear, but I think it gets easier when you’re not doing it alone.

Iso: Who is your favorite character to cosplay?

Louise: As I said previously, Amy Pond! She’s so out there and confident and sassy and gorgeous. Also the Scottish accent is amazing!

Iso: IF YOU COULD LIVE IN OR VISIT ANY FANTASY WORLD, WHERE WOULD YOU GO?

Louise: I would travel time and space with the Doctor. I have no other answer for this. I could literally go anywhere I want!

Iso: Where do you get your inspiration for your cosplays?

Louise: Mostly Instagram because there are so many beautiful and talented cosplayers on there, and also the obvious places being the shows and films themselves!

Iso: WHAT ARE YOUR “FANDOMS”?

Louise: Doctor Who, Marvel, some DC, Hunger Games, Riverdale, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, Good Omens, Sherlock. I’ve just started getting into Stranger Things too! New Girl (not nerdy, but one of my favourite shows). There are probably more but I can’t think off the top of my head.

Iso: WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU WISH BEGINNING COSPLAYERS KNEW?

Louise: Don’t worry about being screen accurate. Please. Honestly when I started out, I thought people would hate my Amy cosplay because I wasn’t a proper ginger but I’ve received such a positive response from the people I follow on Instagram. Embrace your own take on things and ignore the people who hate on it. It doesn’t have to be completely right, you’re being creative and that’s wonderful!

Iso: WHAT TIPS OR TRICKS DO YOU HAVE FOR OTHER COSPLAYERS?

Louise: Go to charity shops, shop around before you go and buy something expensive, just enjoy it and be yourself.

Iso: WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU WISH NON-COSPLAYERS KNEW?

Louise: We’re not weirdos, we’re just people who are passionate about fiction and we’re having more fun than you are. Deal with it. (I wish I had the confidence to say that to someone in real life, ha ha!)

Iso: WHAT COSPLAYS ARE YOU WORKING ON?

Louise: I’m not currently working on any but I have cosplans (some I can’t reveal because Halloween surprises) but I would love to do a Kim Possible cosplay soon as well as young Penelope Blossom from Riverdale with @tommocosplays and @the_whovian_spider

Iso: WHAT COSPLAYS DO YOU WANT TO DO IF MONEY AND TIME WERE NO OBJECT?

Louise: Black Widow, SS Harley Quinn, Hermione/Ginny from Harry Potter, any of the MJ/Spiderwoman variants, different fem versions of The Doctor, maybe Ariel from The Little Mermaid or Princess Merida from Brave. All of which are expensive because wigs/uniforms/dresses/suits and I will not be able to afford for a loooong time!

Iso: WHERE CAN PEOPLE FIND YOUR COSPLAYS?

Louise: On my cosplay Instagram account @pondlifecosplay! Thank you for your love <3

Please remember I do not own any of these pictures and the opinions in this survey belong to the interviewee.
