Welcome to the cosplayer of the week everyone! I met this awesome cosplayer when I was searching for more amazing Doctor Who cosplays! His are fabulous! I hope you enjoy getting to know him a little more
WHAT IS YOUR NAME?
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE BEVERAGE?
I like all kinds, but if I had to choose one, it would definitely be a nice cup of Hot Chocolate! I usually have one in the evening when I’m watching a film or TV show, because it can sometimes get a little cold in the living room, so snuggling up on the sofa with a Hot Chocolate in hand does the job!
TELL ME A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELF.
Well, I’m from the UK, down on the south coast of England, Portsmouth area. I Cosplay, but I’m mostly a musician (I play Drums and Bass and a little bit of Keyboards) I like to spend my free time watching films and TV as well as playing video games too. Outside, I attend comic cons and dress up as my favourite characters and when I’m not cosplaying, I play gigs with my band.
WHEN DID YOU START COSPLAYING?
I started in 2013 and I’ve been doing it ever since I went MCM London Comic Con. My first cosplay was the 5th Doctor from the classic era of Doctor Who because I really wanted to try a character that I could pull off and Doctor Who is one of my favourite TV shows. This incarnation in particular isn’t cosplayed as much as the other Doctors, which is why I chose the 5th.
WHY DO YOU COSPLAY?
I guess it gives me something to do apart from being a musician, since I’m a creative person, so cosplay is a good hobby to take up because I can gain skills (like sewing) and make costumes and props by hand. Another reason why I do Cosplay is because it’s nice to meet new people at conventions and sometimes you can make friends out of it too, which is nice. Taking photos of completed cosplays is a good way to compare your outfit against the original, seeing where you can make adjutants and updates, or even personalised alterations to suit your preferences, it also means you could sell prints and have fans receive autographs from you (I haven’t done that yet).
WHO ARE YOUR COSPLAY IDOLS?
Sometimes I do try to get my Cosplays looking as accurate to the the original image/s, but you can’t always be perfect. When it comes to looking for costume items or props, reference images help me a lot, because I don’t always remember what I should be looking for. To be honest, I wish I could make my props by hand (ie foam core, 3D printed) but I don’t always have time or resources to do so, which can be a drawback for me. Nevertheless, I’m interested in using other methods to make my costumes.
WHAT TYPES OF COSPLAY DO YOU DO?
Mostly characters that I like from my favourite films, TV shows and video games, but if there’s a character that I like the look of, then I would probably cosplay them. Also, I tend to do male characters, because I feel that some female characters are over-sexualised and since I have short hair, I can get away with cosplaying the other sex.
WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE COSPLAYS?
1st Cosplay is the Sniper from TF2, now I’ve only been in the fandom for about 2 years and I when I saw the Sniper for the first time, I knew I had to cosplay him, His outfit is really cool and I love the Sniper’s personality too. Many fans have told me that they really like my Sniper, even if I don’t have all the items, which is a good thing to hear, considering I’ve only worn him 2 times at a few cons last year on 2018.
2nd Cosplay is the 5th Doctor, which was actually my first ever cosplay I did in 2013. Since then, I’ve been updating the outfit to make it more accurate and I just love wearing this particular cosplay whenever I attend cons, also, it’s a favourite among many Doctor Who fans and Cosplayers. Although, I didn’t realise that I do in fact look the 5th Doctor, which makes cosplaying the 5th Doctor even more fitting since the likeness to myself and Peter Davison (In his younger years) is quite incredible and a tad scary as well!
WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU WANT TO COSPLAY BUT PROBABLY NEVER WILL?
I don’t have one at the moment, to be honest.
DO YOU MAKE, BUY, OR SPECIAL ORDER YOUR COSPLAYS?
So far, I’ve made one prop, but most of the time, I tend to buy stuff from shops or on the Internet, because some resources and/or items aren’t always available to me, so I have to find other things to use for my cosplays and props. However, I have never commissioned anyone to make me a full cosplay, but I have asked some people to help me make a specific part of the costume I can’t do myself and I do really appreciate the help, otherwise I wouldn’t be able to my Cosplays.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT COSPLAY?
Making things especially, as I’m quite a creative person, so doing costumes is a nice way to show off my imagination and love for being a fan of a character. It’s also nice to meet different people at Conventions and make friends as well.
WHAT IS THE MOST DIFFICULT THING FOR YOU ABOUT COSPLAY?
Sometimes sewing, although I’ve never hand made any costumes myself, props are also difficult since I don’t always have the resources to be able to produce them. As for any cosplayer, money will always be an issue, especially since there’s gonna be something you’ll want to buy, but then it will be too expensive, which does impact your cosplay and getting it finished as well.
WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE CHARACTER TO COSPLAY?
Definitely Sniper, cause his outfit is really fun to wear and it suits me well. Also, the items I purchased for the Cosplay were a challenge, but with patience and searching really hard, I found some pretty good stuff off of eBay and my local charity shops and other places I went to as well. Most of the time, I do get recognised as Sniper, even though he’s not as popular as Medic or Scout, but at least it’s nice to be noticed by fans and other cosplayers.
IF YOU COULD LIVE IN OR VISIT ANY FANTASY WORLD, WHERE WOULD YOU GO?
Good question! Uh, I would probably live in the TF2 universe, since some of the maps in the game look pretty nice and would be cool to visit.
WHERE DO YOU GET YOUR INSPIRATION FOR YOUR COSPLAYS?
I usually just have a brainwave and instantly decide to cosplay a character after watching a film or seeing a video or even seeing other Cosplayers at cons doing character that wouldn’t expect to have been cosplayed. Sometimes my ideas can be unrealistic, because of not being able to attempt some parts of the outfit or even make props for the costume either, because of how complex the design/s are.
WHAT ARE YOUR “FANDOMS”?
Ok, let’s see…
Back To The Future
Bioshock and Bioshock: Infinite
Halo 3 and Halo Reach
The Terminator Franchise
The Stanly Parable
The Turing Test
And many more that I could name.
WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU WISH BEGINNING COSPLAYERS KNEW?
I’m not sure, actually.
WHAT TIPS OR TRICKS DO YOU HAVE FOR OTHER COSPLAYERS?
Depends on the cosplayer and what materials and resources they prefer to use.
WHAT COSPLAYS ARE YOU WORKING ON?
None at the moment, but I’m sure I’ll have some ideas at some point.
At the moment, I’m happy cosplaying the characters I like at various conventions.
WHAT COSPLAYS DO YOU WANT TO DO IF MONEY AND TIME WERE NO OBJECT?
I’m not sure.
WHERE CAN PEOPLE FIND YOUR COSPLAYS?
I only have Instagram, which is where I post all of my Cosplay stuff and showcase outfits and props I’ve put together for various cosplays.
If you would like to find out more about my cosplay activities, my username is @red_sniper_cosplay.
