Cosplayer Spotlight – Riss Boaden

This geek Mom is goals! And her cosplays are nearly as adorable as her little geek babies.

WHAT IS YOUR NAME?

Riss Boaden / @mrsboaden

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE BEVERAGE?

Hazelnut Latte closely followed by a Espresso Martini.

TELL ME A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELF.

I am a wife and mother of two young children. Life is pretty hectic most days but I always find time to be creative. My favourite crafts are embroidery, cross stitch, polymer clay, resin, paper crafts, knitting and crochet…but I am forever trying new things!

I grew up in the country so I love to spend time in the scrub or at the beach, city life can be pretty suffocating and even though I have lived here for over a decade I still struggle.

I have always been a book geek. Fantasy usually. I would spend afternoons laying on the back of my horse reading whatever I had found at the library. Now days it is still Fantasy but throw in some Scifi – the more obscure the better!

My Husband has introduced me to a lot of the fandoms I now find so wonderful – in particular Harry Potter. We discovered Stargate and Doctor Who together and I love nerding out with him.

WHEN DID YOU START COSPLAYING?

I have always enjoyed ‘dress up’ but my first time cosplaying was in April 2018 at Evolve as a Hufflepuff Student.

WHY DO YOU COSPLAY?

It is a great crossover between my love of geeky things and my need to craft! When I am Cosplaying I don’t feel like ‘just’ a wife and mother. I find that by putting on a costume I can be whoever I want. I can find a confidence that I had thought that I lost years ago and it has been great for my mental health. I have also met some fantastic people who love to nerd out over the same things, and I have also learnt SO MANY new creative outlets.

WHO ARE YOUR COSPLAY IDOLS?

Poison Peach Props – Gwendydd is incredible and has been a great support and source of information.

The Estrada Sisters – Not only are they individually talented, but I love how they come together as a team.

Kamui Cosplay – Does it need to be said why? Her extensive skill set and ability to make some perfect characters come to life blows my mind. She is absolute #cosplaygoals !

WHAT TYPES OF COSPLAY DO YOU DO?

TV shows and Movies at the moment. I have covered my three favourite fandoms so far (Harry Potter, Stargate and Doctor Who) though I am working on a character from my favourite video game.

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE COSPLAYS?

My favourites would have to be Carmen Valentina from the Estrada Sisters and her incredible collection of Harry Potter cosplays. I love that she has tackled not one or two, but at my last count, NINE of the outfits that Harry wears through the movies.

WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU WANT TO COSPLAY BUT PROBABLY NEVER WILL?

I don’t think I want to put a limit on what I want to attempt. As I learn and discover new techniques I am looking at characters in a whole new light. I can no longer just watch a movie, I am studying the costumes and props that are being worn and used as well.

DO YOU MAKE, BUY, OR SPECIAL ORDER YOUR COSPLAYS?

I make nearly everything myself. I did commission my cloak for my Hufflepuff Student cosplay. It is the creative challenge that I am looking for when I cosplay.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT COSPLAY?

Being ‘seen’, but not as myself, as a character that I love.

WHAT IS THE MOST DIFFICULT THING FOR YOU ABOUT COSPLAY?

Social Anxiety and Self Doubt – the lead up to a Con and also after a Con. Not feeling ‘good enough’ to even call myself a Cosplayer when I see so many incredible artists out there.

Who is your favorite character to cosplay?

Probably my Hufflepuff Student. I have found that not only people my age recognize and like it, but also children. I feel ‘seen’ when I am cosplaying, but as a Hufflepuff most people know and understand who I am. Although I was pleasantly surprised by the number of people who knew I was Hathor at Supanova, made me feel like I had done her justice.

IF YOU COULD LIVE IN OR VISIT ANY FANTASY WORLD, WHERE WOULD YOU GO?

The wizarding world for sure! To use magic to clean the house so I had more time to craft – seems like the perfect world to me!

Where do you get your inspiration for your cosplays?

From characters that I admire or that I align myself with.

For Hufflepuff Student I believe that if I were to go to Hogwarts I absolutely would be sorted into Hufflepuff, so it seemed like a logical move to create a cosplay around my favourite fandom.

With my Osgood Cosplay I had arrived home from my first Con where I had cosplayed and the first thing we watched was the episode of Doctor Who where Petronella Osgood appears. I already knew how to knit so thought ‘why not’! She is absolutely how I would be if I were to meet the Doctor and her character development over her appearances through the series is fantastic and something that I really admire.

With Hathor She is such a strong women. Knows exactly what she wants and goes for it. Nothing like how I see myself at all. Looking at what she wears I knew that it would be a challenge and I was keen to learn how to use EVA foam. And a challenge it was!

My daughter (5) has always enjoyed dressing up as well, so at the beginning of the year when I was cosplaying Osgood she asked me if she could be a TARDIS. How could I say no to that request?! I know she loves Doctor Who as she has been watching is since she was 18months old. It did surprise me, however, that she asked to be the TARDIS when I know that Rose is her favourite character. I love how thrilled she was with the dress that I made for her and how excited she was to Cosplay with me at her first Con recently.

WHAT ARE YOUR “FANDOMS”?

Harry Potter, Stargate, Doctor Who, Marvel, Star Wars, Pokemon, Battlestar

WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU WISH BEGINNING COSPLAYERS KNEW?

There are so many resources for information and anything is possible.

Eleanor as TARDIS – Doctor Who

WHAT TIPS OR TRICKS DO YOU HAVE FOR OTHER COSPLAYERS?

Write a list! Prioritize each step. If you are working with an end date for a con then spread out the work. Con crunch sucks the fun out of it.

WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU WISH NON-COSPLAYERS KNEW?

It is so much fun to be someone else! I wish I hadn’t just admired cosplayers at Cons for so many years and I had tried it sooner.

WHAT COSPLAYS ARE YOU WORKING ON?

Theresa from Fable II & III for myself, and Reaver from Fable III for my Husband. It will be his first cosplay and I am so excited that he wants to get involved. I have quite a few cosplans for future projects – Captain Qwark(for my husband – Ratchet and Clank), Dalek (for my son – Doctor Who), Clara (Doctor Who), Sybill Trelawney (Harry Potter) and Six (Battlestar Galactica)

WHAT COSPLAYS DO YOU WANT TO DO IF MONEY AND TIME WERE NO OBJECT?

Queen Amidala would be incredible to be able to do. Maybe one day…

WHERE CAN PEOPLE FIND YOUR COSPLAYS?

My Instagram – @mrsboaden , along with all my other crafting

Please remember I do not own any of these pictures and the opinions in this survey belong to the interviewee.
