Cosplayer Spotlight – Sheikah Knight Cosplay

Photographer: MKM Photography http://www.mkmphotography.ca/

This wonderful cosplayer is a great way to start a week. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

WHAT IS YOUR NAME?

Name: Kai Anderson
Handle: Sheikah Knight Cosplay

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE BEVERAGE?

Coffee. Coffee is life.

TELL ME A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELF.

I am studying mechanical engineering and I like to try and apply these skills into my cosplay. There’s a surprising amount of skills that cross over. I am openly non-binary and use they/them or he/him pronouns.

WHEN DID YOU START COSPLAYING?

I have been cosplaying since 2003. A LOT has changed from that time, from materials, to styles, to abilities even. Some changes for the better, some for the worse. Depends on how you look at it.

WHY DO YOU COSPLAY?

Cosplay helped to teach me who I am. It got me out of a dark place. Although I can’t always build, I don’t see myself stopping anytime soon. Maybe it’s silly, but it’s something that means a lot to me. It’s helped me get over a lot of hard things in my life. It’s also fun to try more outgoing characters, being a total introvert myself. “Kai, you’re hugging the wall again, what would Sidon do?”

WHO ARE YOUR COSPLAY IDOLS?

I don’t like the term “idol”, but there is one. Kohalu. HAVE YOU SEEN THOSE WINGS??? Look him up, he’s amazing.

WHAT TYPES OF COSPLAY DO YOU DO?

Lately I’ve been heavier on the video game cosplay but I do anime as well.

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE COSPLAYS?

Ooo, hard to pick. my Hyrule Warriors Sheik for sure, definitely my latest one, Prince Sidon, he was fun to build, if tricky here and there, Spyro was fun, but i think he needs improvements especially given the new game that just released, and my Hyrule Historia version of Link, he’s much easier to wear when I’m having an off day. I’ve made a fair few cosplays!

WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU WANT TO COSPLAY BUT PROBABLY NEVER WILL?

“Never will”? Please, if I wanna do it hard enough I WILL. Cosplaying a gundam has been on my radar for years, haven’t done it yet but I know I will eventually. Might take me a while to get to it but I don’t give up on an idea.

DO YOU MAKE, BUY, OR SPECIAL ORDER YOUR COSPLAYS?

Primarily make. I really enjoy the build process and I really love entering contests, providing they’re properly judged. The judges can provide valuable feedback on how to improve in the future even if you don’t win 🙂

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT COSPLAY?

I love going to cons and meeting people. If you’re wearing a cosplay from the same series, you already have an ice breaker! I’ve met some of my best friends through cosplay…and my fiance too!

WHAT IS THE MOST DIFFICULT THING FOR YOU ABOUT COSPLAY?

I can’t always make a new cosplay due to time constraints and budget. I end up wearing the same one for a long time. But I try to build mine to last years. If you’re going to make an elaborate cosplay, why only wear it to one event?

Who is your favorite character to cosplay?

Sheik. He’s just fun to do. And I can ninja away if I need to haha.

IF YOU COULD LIVE IN OR VISIT ANY FANTASY WORLD, WHERE WOULD YOU GO?

Hyrule. So many places to explore!

WHERE DO YOU GET YOUR INSPIRATION FOR YOUR COSPLAYS?

Usually it’s something I’ll see then just wanna do it. Then I’ll do it. Not complicated really!

WHAT ARE YOUR “FANDOMS”?

Zelda I guess. I tend to make a lot! And I’m planning more too. Especially with how many outfits Link gets in BOTW!

WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU WISH BEGINNING COSPLAYERS KNEW?

Don’t set your expectations so high! Start simple, don’t try to go complex right away, especially under a time constraint. The person who made Erza’s Heaven’s Wheel armor probably spent MONTHS building it. Also, give yourself ample time to actually FINISH your build. If you rush, you’re gonna get something that you’re gonna be highly unhappy with. It takes time to develop those skills, be patient with yourself!

WHAT TIPS OR TRICKS DO YOU HAVE FOR OTHER COSPLAYERS?

Plan your costume carefully, pace yourself well, don’t let a cosplay stress you out. It’s a hobby. it’s fun! If you want to wear it, focus on the essential base pieces first. If they’re well done, nobody cares. I didn’t have time to complete the jewelry for Sidon. Until I pointed it out, people didn’t even notice they were missing! Just take a breath and focus on the important parts.

WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU WISH NON-COSPLAYERS KNEW?

COSPLAY DOES NOT HAVE TO BE SEXY! The people on “Heroes of Cosplay” do not represent the majority of us. Most of us are working hard in a basement, garage, or bedroom with a craft knife, a sewing machine, some hot glue, a stack of foam and some fabric working around jobs and school trying our best to get our cosplay done on time, many of us on a budget. It bothers me that the “face” of cosplay to the world is nine times out of ten someone in a bikini and a wig. That’s not the majority.

WHAT COSPLAYS ARE YOU WORKING ON?

Right now I’m still trying to complete the pieces I missed on Sidon. I’m also poking at a Breath of the Wild Link cosplay. I’m planning on updating my Spyro as well, but that’s still in the planning phase.

WHAT COSPLAYS DO YOU WANT TO DO IF MONEY AND TIME WERE NO OBJECT?

Gundam. Mechs. ALL THE MECHS. So many mechs….
