Welcome to the week everyone. our first cosplayer of the week is adorable! Please remember to give them and all our cosplayers some love on their social media accounts!
WHAT IS YOUR NAME?
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE BEVERAGE?
Jasmine tea or lavender bubble tea, I would drink either or both every day if it was an option.
TELL ME A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELF.
I’m a Canadian/American who grew up in Thailand. I raise snails, collect Hello Kitty plushies, special pop funkos and specific teapots. My spare time is spent teaching children at church or tutoring in maths, science etc. I teach sewing lessons to young children as well. I work as a Data Analyst at a private university and happen to be Deaf.
WHEN DID YOU START COSPLAYING?
I started cosplaying because I love costumes. As a child I would recreate things I saw in books, on tv or even from stage productions. It made things feel more real to me and helped me keep up with an overactive imagination and lack of friends my age. Growing up very isolated in a small village in Thailand, books and costumes were my main way of interacting with the world.
WHY DO YOU COSPLAY?
Now I cosplay because I get to become a character I love. It immediately connects me to other people who share my appreciation of a show, movie, or even just the character themselves. I especially love cosplaying around children. Their joy at seeing a real life version of their favourite characters always melts my heart.
WHO ARE YOUR COSPLAY IDOLS?
I admire so many cosplayers! Some are famous and have huge followings and others not as well known but amazing and ridiculously talented. Anyone who cosplays with passion and love for their art and those around them is someone I’ll admire.
WHAT TYPES OF COSPLAY DO YOU DO?
I do anime, superhero, Disney, dreamworks lol many types I guess. Basically if I love the character, their design and think I could pull them off; I’ll cosplay them or dream about making them XD.
WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE COSPLAYS?
It’s probably cheating to say I love all my cosplays and am horrible at picking favourites. Currently my favourite would have to be Mantis. She’s the first cosplay I’ve ever done that won a competition and to be honest that was a huge boost to my self esteem in terms of my skills. Also I love how people react when they see her. But Macrophage is a close second because she was so much fun to make and her skirt is ridiculously bouncy.
WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU WANT TO COSPLAY BUT PROBABLY NEVER WILL?
Hmm… this used to be a long list. But the last year has helped me see that I’ve been limiting myself for years as to what I can and cannot do. So now maybe someone I want to do but probably never will is Batwoman or Missy from Dr Who.
DO YOU MAKE, BUY, OR SPECIAL ORDER YOUR COSPLAYS?
It depends on the costume and my health at the time. Most of my cosplays are handmade to save money and to get the details the way I want them. I’ve never commissioned a costume although I’ve been tempted and may do sometime. Props have been commissioned before though and it’s always such a relief to not have to make a full costume and then the prop to… at least for me. I’ve bought a few cosplays that were actually cheaper to buy than make due to popularity of the characters, ex- Sailor Neptune.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT COSPLAY?
I love how it makes communities of people that appear to have nothing in common. The creation of the cosplay is a highlight as well. I love figuring out how to make something, see it come into the final form and then do fun photo shoots or groups. The main reason I have social media is to see other people make their amazing builds and sew such phenomenal works.
WHAT IS THE MOST DIFFICULT THING FOR YOU ABOUT COSPLAY?
My physical limitations usually are my greatest struggle. I am not able to hand sew anymore and that can make detailing certain items challenging. Likewise my being Deaf can make for people avoiding me at cons, rejection from photographers and rescinding of invitation from panels. Despite knowing that the amount of people who support and encourage me far outnumber the ones who cant be bothered… it’s still painful and nerve-wracking. I’ve only recently begun joining groups for cosplay again and even then I’ve been very hesitant in many ways to get too involved.
WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE CHARACTER TO COSPLAY?
Neo! She’s so much fun to smirk and glare as. I love making different variations of her. She’s so easy for me to cosplay because she doesn’t speak and thus people are always more patient/understanding when I am her. It’s always fun. Plus I get to have pink hair and that’s always a plus.
IF YOU COULD LIVE IN OR VISIT ANY FANTASY WORLD, WHERE WOULD YOU GO?
I would visit Berk in how to train your dragon because dragons are amazing and I would absolutely love to ride one. Live there no lol but visit in a heartbeat.
WHERE DO YOU GET YOUR INSPIRATION FOR YOUR COSPLAYS?
I really really really really like a character. So my inspiration comes from shows or movies that I really enjoy. Or when I just love a character so much that I have to make them even if I’m not a huge fan of the show… lol that’s never awkward. Or I see fanart of a character I already cosplay so I wanna make that version to.
WHAT ARE YOUR “FANDOMS”?
Many many fandoms… here’s a few: HTTYD, Downton Abby, the worst witch, LOTR, HP, Doctor Who, Star Wars, Addams Family, Marvel, DC, Darkhorse, SU, She-Ra, FMA, Black Lagoon, Claymore and Cells at Work
WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU WISH BEGINNING COSPLAYERS KNEW?
Starting off can be as easy or hard as you want to make it. Don’t limit yourself to what others think you can do or even what you tell yourself is possible. Learn from others, ask for help and build your skill set. No one improves anything without hard work and time. And even costumes that look perfect have hidden flaws and secrets. Just remember to have fun and be uplifting. Also it’s perfectly okay to take breaks and even quit. It’s just a hobby. I took 4 years off from cosplaying and now I enjoy it as much as ever.
WHAT TIPS OR TRICKS DO YOU HAVE FOR OTHER COSPLAYERS?
Always check thrift stores before buying fabric for basic things like generic shirts, jackets, skirts, trousers and dresses. I’ve been able to save so much money via repurposed items and even using material from old things to make costumes vs buying new.
Take a fixit kit to cons with you, safety pins, needle/thread, hot glue gun etc.
Drink water during the con! Don’t put it off all day due to being concerned for your costume fit! And don’t drink just soda, coffee, tea, alcohol instead. Drink water. It can make your whole day better.
WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU WISH NON-COSPLAYERS KNEW?
Many cosplays are fragile so no touchy. Even if they’re not, always ask before touching a person, and accept the no without a fuss.
WHAT COSPLAYS ARE YOU WORKING ON?
Queen Angella from She-Ra reboot, Blue Diamond from SU and a secret cosplay from Fairytail
WHAT COSPLAYS DO YOU WANT TO DO IF MONEY AND TIME WERE NO OBJECT?
Maleficent and Shadow Weaver (with animatronics) would be the dream if money and time were not an issue projects. Still could happen someday. Patient waiting has seen things happen I never dared dream of.
WHERE CAN PEOPLE FIND YOUR COSPLAYS?
I have an Instagram, Facebook and cosplay animo account. I’m most active on IG though
Do you act like the character when you are in cosplay?
It depends on the character but mostly yes I try very hard to act like the character. For Neo I usually don’t speak, Mantis is all bubbly and smiles. It helps pull the cosplay together along with posing and props.
Please remember I do not own any of these pictures and the opinions in this survey belong to the interviewee.
