TELL ME A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELF.
I’m a super bubbly, enthusiastic, energetic, people person, with a love for cosplay, pets (ALL THE PETS), and travelling.
WHEN DID YOU START COSPLAYING?
I started cosplaying roughly four or five years ago. I went to a small little hometown convention. Back then it was called Meggacon, and it was the very first year they debuted their lovely convention. Its now called Megga XP and I’ve gone every year since, as a sort of anniversary of cosplay. That first day of cosplay I appeared in just a general, steampunkesk type outfit. I had made the hat, skirt and boot covers, and wore a brown striped corset with it. It was wonderful! I loved it so much. I was so nervous to go some place all dressed in costume not on Halloween. I was wondering if anyone else would even be dressed up or if I’d just end up looking like a fool. When I saw how many people were dressed up, I got a surge of excitement. Many MANY photos were taken, and I loved every bit of the entire scene/community.
WHY DO YOU COSPLAY?
This might seem a tad…selfish? But I cosplay for myself. Cosplay was something that I found on my own, with no influence from any body and that itself is a huge part of why I love it so much. Its something I found, found out I loved, and continued doing, despite what anyone else had to say. Later on, I started cosplaying for children and that became my new reasoning. I will never forget the time I was dressed up as Princess Rapunzel, and I was walking down a street after a convention, and this little girl was sitting in her back yard playing with some dolls. She looked up from her play, saw me and immediately screamed. She came running at me, yelling my name and gave me THE biggest hug I’ve ever received from someone her size. She also asked for my autograph and I obliged. It was the single most sweetest moment in my entire life. So I started cosplaying for children. I joined a group of local cosplayers who visited childrens hospitals, and walked around during charity events, to bring happiness and wishes come true to so many children. Later towards the growing nearer present, I began to cosplay for myself again. I still love dressing up for children, but ive learned a lot of cosplayers will use any excuse to talk bad about other cosplayers, dragging them down based on their looks, body types, ect. And I’ve had to come to terms with the fact that I’m not doing this for them. Let them talk, they can down me all they want about my body type, or wig preference and all, I am cosplaying for myself, and for the smiles and joy of children and families. Not for other cosplayers.
WHO ARE YOUR COSPLAY IDOLS?
Honestly I don’t really have just one or two Idols. My idols go out to the cosplayers, who: Are beautiful people. Not just on the outside, but who actually have kind, caring hearts, and who are into cosplay for the right reasons. People who dress up and do cosplay because they love it, and if they are making money at it (Awesome!). And I also have mad respect for anyone who also has a green thumb when it comes to needle work. hmm or would that maybe be a red thumb for how many times they have pricked their thumbs over the years! HAHA. One of my dearest friends Tori Zaharia of Polar Phoenix Cosplay, and one of the best hearts and personalities of anyone I know. She is one of my biggest cos idols. She has a huge heart for children, working in cahoots with Wig for Kids, often dressed as Princess Anna from Frozen. Tori is a pageant queen and a Cosidol. She is living proof, that you can have mad beauty, and still be caring, passionate, and a wicked awesome cosplayer.
WHAT TYPES OF COSPLAY DO YOU DO?
Well….it depends on the convention or event honestly. I’ve done everything from anime to superheros to princess’ to videogames, the whole nine yards. Princess’ and superheros are probably my favorite just because it gets crazy attention from children and adults a like.
WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE COSPLAYS?
One of my biggest faves in cosplay, and inspiration for my cosplay name is the Marvel superhero Squirrelgirl. Shes this amazing kick-booty girl, who happens to have bio appendages of a squirrel (The tail mostly, and ability to talk to squirrels, amongst other rad powers). When I was looking for a superhero I wanted to cosplay as four or five years ago, I wanted to do something nobody really knew of. Something that would kind of stand out and be like…who are you supposed to be kind of thing. But she first attracted me 1. be cuz of her crazy name..I was like “What?? Theres no way thats actually a superhero” And sure enough she was..And now out of nowhere several years later she is kicking off all over the place! 2. have you seen that booty? Squirrelgirl is super thicc. And im not plus size, but honey ive got the curves. And just astounded. Me: Not being super into the hero field yet, i was not accustomed to curvy heroes, I was used to seeing super awesome and powerful stick figures, with over sized proportions in other areas. And after a little more research I was legit about the same size, weight and curviness of Squirrelgirl. I was like shes HECKIN PERFECT and I instantly fell in love. I now have over four or five different suites that I wear for her, all of which I made myself. She is my ULTIMATE favorite cosplay ever.
WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU WANT TO COSPLAY BUT PROBABLY NEVER WILL?
I’ve always wanted to do a lewd or boudoir cosplay photo shoot with a bunch of close friends because I’ve heard it has much self esteem boosting affects, and I think it would be super fun. However, i’m not sure if I would want that on my social media. Im a pretty… closed/ private person, so it would be hard to release that. But it’d be fun.
DO YOU MAKE, BUY, OR SPECIAL ORDER YOUR COSPLAYS?
More often than not, I make my own cosplays. I’d say probably about 60 percent of my cosplays I have made myself, the other 40 I’ve special ordered. Herostime.com is one of my favorite websites to get rather inexpensive superhero/gaming costumes from and you can add a SPECIAL ORDER option for only five dollars more! Its super great, and because im short and curvy they generally come out perfect every time if I just put in all my measurements.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT COSPLAY?
I love the community. Obviously with all groups of people you have a few rough picks, but the cosplay community has been had a huge impact on my life. I have met so many amazing people, most of my friends I currently have, I would never have met if I had not gone to my first convention. The whole community just comes together in a way that us completely unexplainable. So many cosplayers work together for charity events, and find joy visiting children in hospitals. I myself know, that not just me but several other cosplayers carry costumes in their car, just in case they need it for a random visit somewhere with kids.
WHAT IS THE MOST DIFFICULT THING FOR YOU ABOUT COSPLAY?
The most difficult thing I would say is probably having to keep up with all the conventions, and decide which ones I can make appearances at, and which ones I have to cut my losses. Generally I pick by which of my friends are going where. Where are the chillest people going to be. Or who the coolest guest artist is. There are so many conventions in Michigan alone now, that there’s basically one every single weekend, at least. Where am I going to go next??
IF YOU COULD LIVE IN OR VISIT ANY FANTASY WORLD, WHERE WOULD YOU GO?
Oh man! I have so many different worlds I would love to live in. Harry Potter world is definitely up there, Lord of the Rings, Disney, the Marvel Spider-verse, but I think the one that beats them all is my favorite book series called “The Misadventures of Bloody Jack”. Which is an AMAZING book series diving into the adventures of a female orphan who becomes a pirate, refined lady, and scourge of the seven seas. Its absolutely amazing. I would “kill” to live in her world, and be apart of the adventures and mischief that she gets up to. I love everything about it, from the epic adventures, the heroism, the intense battles, the romantic interests, to the brilliantly described wardrobes of 1800’s England, and France. Boy would I LOVE to be able to get into the ball gowns, the boudoir rougeish outfits of the house of the rising sun dresses, to the savvy sea wearing attire of the pirates. THAT is my dream world.
WHERE DO YOU GET YOUR INSPIRATION FOR YOUR COSPLAYS?
I draw my inspiration from every day life. I am surround by constant nerdiness. It wasn’t always that way, but now that ive delved into the nerd world, I’m constantly learning new geeky things, getting into new fandom’s and just living out the life of a con-goer every day. I have so many fandom’s, its hard to say particularly wear I draw my inspiration from, but its more or less a combination of everything in my every day life.
WHAT ARE YOUR “FANDOMS”?
Speaking of fandom’s. I’m obsessed with movies, so I love everything Disney, I love Lord of the Rings, Pirates of the Caribbean, Harry Potter etc, and I also love comic books. My favorite fan base for comics is Marvel. Other than Squirrelgirl, I am obsessed with everything Spider-verse. Silk is my absolute favorite, followed closely by Miles Morales. I’m also a huge fan of book based fandom’s. This past year I have gotten way more into Anime and Video games. Those fandom’s would include Overwatch, and A few different anime’s that I have sold my soul too.
WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU WISH BEGINNING COSPLAYERS KNEW?
If anything was taken away from this interview its definitely this. Dear new cosplayers: Please please PLEASE, just because a cosplayer looks like a pro and looks intensely intimidating….most the time we’re not. Run up to them and say hi! Me personally I love if someone follows me on social media and introduces themselves, and/or wants to take pictures with me or hang out. I LOVE making new friends and finding people that I have a lot in common with. Please do not be afraid to come and say Hi. We Love it.
WHAT TIPS OR TRICKS DO YOU HAVE FOR OTHER COSPLAYERS?
Make an emergency cosplay kit to take with you to conventions. You never know when something is going to rip, un-stitch, break, or come unglued. It will be a literal life saver if you’re walking around a convention with part of your costume falling off. And if you forget. Call out Con Mom. No joke, some one will be there with extra supplies and usually are more than willing to help get you back up and running. Also, somethings people don’t usually think about body guards/ bathroom buddies.Body guards can help when you have an oversized cosplay that you don’t want messed up by people that are not paying attention, or to help if you have creepy people lurkin on ya. It doesn’t always happen but I think most’ve us have been in a situation where no matter what cues we give someone, they just don’t take the hint. And the bathroom buddy….I’ve had several cosplays were I just didn’t think… “Gee…how am I going to get out of this if i have to take a leak” No joke. it can be totes embarrassing asking a stranger to help you undress. But if you have a good friends you’re comfortable with..not a problem, but if you don’t most people are again more than happy to help ya out. one more tip: Dont get caught up in cosplayer drama. Its awful. stay out. beware. don’t do it.
WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU WISH NON-COSPLAYERS KNEW?
Please be respectful, just because dressing up for Halloween 43 times a year is not your thing, please don’t ride us about it. We all have our things that we love and enjoy. Some of us just love being children, and playing dress up. In the words of Peter Pan, im never growing up.
WHAT COSPLAYS ARE YOU WORKING ON?
Well currently none. Its mostly the end of the season for me, but next year, you can expect to see some new Disney princess’, HOPEFULLY an Overwatch character (I’m undecided who) and a NEW Spider suit!!
WHAT COSPLAYS DO YOU WANT TO DO IF MONEY AND TIME WERE NO OBJECT?
One of my BIGGEST dream cosplay goals: (I get a LOT of hate for it, )but I really want to make a fursuit. I just think they are super cute, and adorable, and as a seamstress it would be a HUGE accomplishment on my end. And….If I end up being good at it, there is a lot of money going into the career of suit making. Just sayin. 🙂
WHERE CAN PEOPLE FIND YOUR COSPLAYS?
You can find me on Instagram at Squirrel_Meets_World and on Facebook at Squirrelly Cosplay
Would you ever do/or have you done, genderbent cosplays or crossplays?
And the answer is Yes! One of my favorite cosplays that I didn’t mention, I did a crossplay as Chip Skylark from The Fairly Odd Parents. Its literally one of my favorites, because ill walk past people in a crowded hall, and suddenly the do a double take and their lie: Chip Skylark???! And I turn around and flash them the hand guns with a big smile. Its SOOOO great, and it gives me a whole new personality and character to portray myself as that you don’t get with many feminine or female roles.
Please remember I do not own any of these pictures and the opinions in this survey belong to the interviewee.
