I know I say this every week, but we are halfway to the weekend!!! And as a reward, treat yourself to this great cosplayer interview.
WHAT IS YOUR NAME?
Hello!! My preferred name is Star, and you can find me around the interwebz as Starfaise Cosplay (or just Starfaise on some sites).
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE BEVERAGE?
Coke Zero, for sure. Or, sorry, Coke “Zero Sugar” as it is now called. I can easily go through a 12-pack in a day or two, which might not be healthy but at least it doesn’t have sugar in it! If I’m feeling frisky, I’ll add some Jack to it.
TELL ME A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELF.
Let’s see. I am older than the average cosplayer on Instagram but I don’t mind, I find it fun to be able to mentor the younger cosplayers and looks after them and be a Con Mom. I am a science teacher by day and a wine server by night. I took a break from that for six months to climb cell phone towers, but I much prefer teaching. I am the Dance Captain of Krewe du Moon (@krewedumoon), which is a Sailor Moon dance and cosplay group out of New Orleans. I also spend most of my free time (when not working on cosplay or playing video games) volunteering as an admin for the Potterhead Running Club & Whovian Running Club.
I also have way too many animals. Seriously. It’s a real problem but they just keep showing up.
WHEN DID YOU START COSPLAYING?
While I really started to love costuming in the late 90’s as a teen, it wasn’t until 2009 that I attended my first convention in cosplay. I took several years off due to health issues and moving here to Louisiana, but started back up with a vengeance in 2014.
WHY DO YOU COSPLAY?
I love putting on costumes and pretending to me someone else for a day. Halloween has always been my favorite holiday since I was a child, since I could wear costumes in public without people thinking I was crazy. And now, with cosplay, I can wear them all year long with fellow nerds that like wearing them too.
WHO ARE YOUR COSPLAY IDOLS?
This may be an odd answer, but I don’t really have any idols per say. I would have to name every single person that I follow and everyone I meet at cons, because anyone that has the courage to put themselves out there and wear a crazy costume in public has my immense respect.
WHAT TYPES OF COSPLAY DO YOU DO?
Most of the time, I cosplay things that my friends want to cosplay, because I prefer being in groups as opposed to doing things solo. So all it takes is for someone to say, “Hey Star, we’re doing a X group for Y con, do you want to be Z?” and I’m on board. That said, I do what to do some more Warcraft and Marvel characters in the future!
WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE COSPLAYS?
I love wearing Sailor Uranus because the character really resonates with me. But honestly, Momma Todoroki is one of my all-time favs because it’s comfortable and I LOVE the reactions that I get from people when they realize who I am. And Princess Buttercup of course, since that was my first real official cosplay and I’m still really proud of that dress.
WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU WANT TO COSPLAY BUT PROBABLY NEVER WILL?
Illidan Stormrage from WoW. I want to make that cosplay so badly but I definitely lack the time, skills, and money to actually pull it off. Plus I can’t imagine wearing it around a con all day long.
DO YOU MAKE, BUY, OR SPECIAL ORDER YOUR COSPLAYS?
A little bit of all of the above! I personally love going to the thrift store and finding pieces that I can alter or pattern from. And sometimes I find everything that I need there! Generally most of my cosplays are a mixture of bought, altered, and made. For example, my husband wanted to do a Bluntman cosplay and I was able to find all of the big pieces for it at Goodwill. And then we just designed the shirt logo on photoshop and I used my Cameo to cut it out and my shirt press to stick it on there!
WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT COSPLAY?
All of the amazing friends that I have met along the way! Seriously, cosplayers can be some of the most wonderful, loving, loyal, supportive people on this planet and I wish that the rest of the world could learn a thing or two from them. I also love getting the chance to be creative and make things.
WHAT IS THE MOST DIFFICULT THING FOR YOU ABOUT COSPLAY?
People that think they have the right to tell you what you should and should not do because of your weight, gender, skin color, etc. Cosplay is for everyone, and everyone can cosplay what they want.
WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE CHARACTER TO COSPLAY?
This is a tough one! I honestly adore cosplaying as Sailor Uranus/Haruka Tenoh, but I also got tired of being put in a box and having people question why I wasn’t cosplaying as her if I decided to wear something else. So it kind of soured the cosplay for me.
IF YOU COULD LIVE IN OR VISIT ANY FANTASY WORLD, WHERE WOULD YOU GO?
I just want to live out the rest of my life in Hobbiton. I also wouldn’t mind living in the Harry Potter universe, but I know I’d probably end up as a Muggle and that wouldn’t be much fun at all. Being a hobbit seems safer.
WHAT ARE YOUR “FANDOMS”?
My biggest fandoms of all time are Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings, and The X-Files. But I tend to cosplay more from animes like Sailor Moon, BNHA, Naruto, Love Live, etc. One day I’ll find someone that wants to be the Scully to my Mulder, though.
WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU WISH BEGINNING COSPLAYERS KNEW?
YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL/HANDSOME. YOU ARE AMAZING. DON’T LET THE MUGGLES GET YOU DOWN!!!! Seriously, all cosplayers started somewhere. We all had that cheap wig and bad make-up and hastily thrown together cosplay at some point (I still have all of those after all these years, let’s be honest). Don’t ever feel like you’re less than just because you are at a different spot in your cosplay journey than the big famous cosplayers are.
WHAT TIPS OR TRICKS DO YOU HAVE FOR OTHER COSPLAYERS?
Amazon is your best friend. Seriously. MapOfBeauty wigs are high quality and cheap, and most can withstand a decent amount of heat for styling. If you want to learn how to sew, read ‘The Idiot’s Guide to Sewing’. Seriously. I used that to teach sewing classes at my school and it never did me wrong. Don’t stress about being perfect. If you have issues wearing colored contacts, photoshop is your friend (and ask your photographers if they are willing to edit the eye color for you!) Nine times out of ten, people aren’t going to actually remember what you looked like in person, just the photos you post, so if you edit the eye color for your instagram post no one will be any wiser 😉
WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU WISH NON-COSPLAYERS KNEW?
We aren’t cosplaying for their pleasure or entertainment, we’re cosplaying for us. Please stop thinking you have any say in what we wear or do!
WHAT COSPLAYS ARE YOU WORKING ON?
Ha! That’s a good one. I’m supposed to be working on a new Sailor Uranus fuku for Kami Con currently, as well as tweaking my villain!MommaRoki cosplay, but we’ll see if that actually happens by the time this is posted.
WHAT COSPLAYS DO YOU WANT TO DO IF MONEY AND TIME WERE NO OBJECT?
Anything involving armor. A lot of WoW cosplays for sure! Illidan, Sylvanas, Jaina, the Judgement set, the Voidheart set….
WHERE CAN PEOPLE FIND YOUR COSPLAYS?
@starfaise_cosplay on Instagram, @starfaisecosplay on Facebook, and sometimes I post them on tumblr @starfaise.
Where did your cosplay handle/name come from?
Obviously, the Star part comes from my nickname (which was given to me because one of my WoW characters was nicknamed that and it was easier for them to call me by character name than remembering my real name). And Faise comes from internet speak for face, because I am Star and I have a face. It’s not a misspelling of ‘phase’ or a, improper conjugation of the french verb ‘faire’, I promise – although the latter would be pretty cool if it were true, but then it would be StarFait.
Please remember I do not own any of these pictures and the opinions in this survey belong to the interviewee.
