Cosplayer Spotlight – Violet Twirls & GluDood

This duo was a pleasure to get to know. I hope you joy getting to know them as much as I did.

WHAT IS YOUR NAME?

Violet Twirls & GluDood

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE BEVERAGE?

Violets favorite beverage is Chardonnay. I’m such a wino! If money was no object I would own a winery! GluDoods is Ardbeg 10.

TELL ME A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELF.

We are a married couple who have always and still do enjoy Halloween and being creative. It was my first ever con, 2017 Causeacon to be exact, that we created a steampunk costume in our basement for fun and ended up winning “Best in Show” for Lucia Bourke-White. I entered her as a beginner and was bumped to expert. We were very shocked. Last year we also won 1st place in Expert for steampunk Beauty and the Beast at Causeacon 2018. Violet works on creating the threads with sewing, gluing, modifying and so on and GluDood is amazing at learning new tricks and making props mainly with eva foam and other methods. He also is a retro gaming collector and enjoys building computer gaming rigs.

WHEN DID YOU START COSPLAYING?

2017. Glu had been to conventions before but it was new territory for me. I was working on my Lucia Bourke-White costume after watching a competition show on Netflix called Steampunked. I have always been into steampunk but never had pursued it. While working on this fun Halloween costume super early, lol like in March! Glu found out he had to work a new convention in town for his job and we both decided it would be fun to show it there. Glu really is the one who introduced me to cosplay. He had dressed up for Star Wars movie showings etc. SO my Halloween costume turned into a cosplay that month.

WHY DO YOU COSPLAY?

Its a fun hobby (for us) that really bonds us.We love to take on new ideas and projects and having each other there to help along the way is wonderful. We cosplay for fun, to make friends and meet like-minded people. As artists, cosplayers, and just fun geeky peeps, our main goal is to encourage anyone who wants to make art or cosplay, no matter size, race, gender, or age!

WHO ARE YOUR COSPLAY IDOLS?

ZonZonZonbi is great. I love her perky personality and her tips and tricks have really helped. Alyson Tabbitha’s make-up skills amaze me. Like is she even human? And even her costuming is insane. I get all fan girl giddy every time she posts a new cosplay and how absolutely on point she hits every character!  Also love Maul Cosplay, Anya Panda, Axceleration, Punished Props, and of course Evil Ted. Each one inspires us and helps us better ourselves in the cosplay world.

WHAT TYPES OF COSPLAY DO YOU DO?

We do a little bit of everything. I mainly like to do Retro and pop culture but we are all over the place. We have done anime, comics, video games, movies, tv shows and so on! It just depends on the character and how we relate to be honest.

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE COSPLAYS?

My favorite cosplays are Lucia Bourke-White of course. She is the one we are most recognized for. I put so much thought into her being a created character. Her name comes from my nanas name Lucia. Bourke-White comes from the first female flying photography journalist. Shes an inspiration to me because I myself have a degree in Broadcasting. My dream job is a radio DJ which I did get to live about 2 years. I even went to antique stores and found an old camera. My wings are what really makes this cosplay. Glu bluprinted them from scratch and they are mechanical. They open and close and even flap with pull strings. Steampunk Beauty and the Beast are favorites. I constructed Belles dress of old disheveled books. We were careful not to use complete and still usable books. Glu is an avid reader. For the exception of the hoop skirt, tank, and belt top, it was all books glued and sewed. Glu’s beast he created the horns and built the small night stand from scratch that included the rose the spun mechanically and lit up. He says its not one of his favorites but it is mine. I think Glu’s favorite would be his cosplay of “The Dude” from the Big Lebowski. It was hilarious to watch him walk around with his drink in his and just being the dude!

WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU WANT TO COSPLAY BUT PROBABLY NEVER WILL?

Oh my this is a tough one. Simply because we like challenges. I personally would want to cosplay Master Chief from Halo in purple skin because I played that a lot when I was in college. But not sure if I will ever get around to doing a full armor build. But now that this has been asked its inspiring me to eventually do this! As for Glu, he’s working towards a Mega Man X build. He loves the character, and the TruForce take on him, but is getting intimidated quickly lol. But with every mistake, he learns another trick, and continues to improve. Life tends to get in the way though, and he keeps starting new projects before he can make serious headway into getting X moving along.

DO YOU MAKE, BUY, OR SPECIAL ORDER YOUR COSPLAYS?

We do a little bit of all! We try and make most of our cosplays or props and accessories however some we buy to make sure we do the character justice. I think its really a personal preference for anyone. Some characters I know I want to make everything. What we don’t make from scratch, we tend to re-purpose from thrift stores.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT COSPLAY?

Meeting new people and seeing their creations and ideas. That is my favorite. Especially if they cosplay the same character as me. I love to see how different each persons vision can be but how amazing each cosplay is.

WHAT IS THE MOST DIFFICULT THING FOR YOU ABOUT COSPLAY?

For me, I will be honest, its being a plus size cosplayer. Sometimes it gets frustrating finding things to fit and even modify. HOWEVER, I also accept this as a positive because it teaches me to learn to love myself and want to show others it doesn’t matter your size that cosplay is for everyone and its for fun! Everyone has to overcome things to feel good in cosplay and keeping a positive outlook should be number one. For Glu it’s finding the time to work on stuff, and justifying purchases for the projects lol.

WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE CHARACTER TO COSPLAY?

Honestly I love Gadget from Rescue Rangers. Such a simple cosplay I created,  but I have so much fun with her. She is silly, feisty, clumsy, and funny which is basically me. I can trip over my feet at a convention and its just part of the character. Every convention I have wore her too the reactions are amazing. People get so excited. I have literally had people stop in the middle of the road and yell “GADGET!” and start singing the Rescue Rangers theme while I crossed the street. The Real Life Peter Griffin spotted me at RetoCon last year and he sang the theme in his Peter voice and that absolutely made my day. Probably top favorite convention memory. Glu liked his Lebowski. It was a VERY comfortable closet cosplay, and got quite a few compliments!

IF YOU COULD LIVE IN OR VISIT ANY FANTASY WORLD, WHERE WOULD YOU GO?

For Violet, it would be Kirby’s Dreamland. Glu would hit up the Star Wars universe and live in the Galactic Archive.

WHAT ARE YOUR “FANDOMS”?

All over the place. We are just a big cluster of pop culture and anime. Movies we love sci-fi, superheros, dramas, comedy, and so on. TV shows include here lately Letterkenny Problems. We laugh so hard! Game of Thrones, Santa Clarita Diet, all the Defenders on Netflix with Iron Fist being my favorite and Daredevil being GluDood’s.

WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU WISH BEGINNING COSPLAYERS KNEW?

You can always redo and upgrade costumes. Keep practicing and keep making. You will learn something new each time.

WHAT TIPS OR TRICKS DO YOU HAVE FOR OTHER COSPLAYERS?

I am thrift store queen! I made my Aurora from a 50 cent rummage store prom dress, acrylic spray paint, white fabric, and girls dance tights. With a little patience and creativity you can make great cosplays on a low budget.

WHAT COSPLAYS ARE YOU WORKING ON?

I am wrapping up a few cosplays now. They are Pam Poovey from Archer. Also have Steampunk Catwoman and Lava Bubblette (just a prop left for her) and a few secret ones I am really excited to start. Glu is working on B Cell from Cells at Work and Mega Man X currently, and will start on plans to make Nightcrawler. He also wants to redo and upgrade Sonic from One Punch Man, as well as a cyberpunk take on Robin Hood.

WHAT COSPLAYS DO YOU WANT TO DO IF MONEY AND TIME WERE NO OBJECT?

Again Master Chief would be up there and I would love to do an armor build of Bumble Bee from Transformers. Glu would invest in nicer foam and get much more serious about Mega Man X.
