Cosplayer Spotlight – wintend64

This cosplayer has some awesome poses and awesome answers.

WHAT IS YOUR NAME?

KT Martin or wintend64

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE BEVERAGE?

Blueberry RedBull for sure! But Baja Blast Mtn Dew is a close second.

TELL ME A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELF.

I’m KT, I’m from Ohio. I’m a junior in college, getting my major in communications and a minor in marketing. I have no idea what I’ll do when I graduate, I really want to work with social media. I have two cats and they’re adorable!

WHEN DID YOU START COSPLAYING?

I started in 2013. It all started out with making Halloween costumes because I didn’t really know conventions and cosplay was actually a thing people did. It wasn’t until 2016 when I went to my first con that I realized I could make costumes for more than just Halloween.

WHY DO YOU COSPLAY?

Because Halloween isn’t enough and I need to dress up for more than just one day a year.

WHO ARE YOUR COSPLAY IDOLS?

Oh Lord I have so many! Kamui Cosplay, Yaya Han, Knightmage, Thousand Faces Cosplay and Akakioga are probably my top 5.

WHAT TYPES OF COSPLAY DO YOU DO?

I stick to mainly to video games (Nintendo specifically) and a little bit of anime. Super heroes and princesses never really appealed to me.

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE COSPLAYS?

Definitely my Barbarian Link cosplay. It took me a year to finish and I went back and remade a bunch of pieces but I’m so glad I took my time to finish it and put in the effort to remake parts once I learned new techniques.

WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU WANT TO COSPLAY BUT PROBABLY NEVER WILL?

A Zelda/Shiek transformation. I’ve thought about it a lot and just can’t figure out how it’d work!

DO YOU MAKE, BUY, OR SPECIAL ORDER YOUR COSPLAYS?

90% of the time I make my costumes. I’ve bought a couple because they were cheap. Usually the reason I buy a cosplay instead of making it is because I’m already currently working on a costume but still would like to cosplay another character so I’ll order it and try to not drown myself in projects.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT COSPLAY?

I love the diverse set of skills that revolve around cosplay. Like you get to paint, carve, mold, sew, engineer, draw, all for a single project. Even the media side of cosplay. You get to learn video creation, photography, modeling and editing. I’m constantly learning new crafting methods, its astounding. I can’t imagine any other hobby teaching me all these skills.

WHAT IS THE MOST DIFFICULT THING FOR YOU ABOUT COSPLAY?

Comparing myself to others. I’m constantly judging myself and sizing myself to other cosplayers. I remind myself that I’m doing this for myself and it’s supposed to be fun. By comparing myself to others I add unnecessary stress to my life. I’m learning to value my individuality and the importance of being unique. Cosplay wouldn’t be as fun if I were just trying to be like everyone else.

Who is your favorite character to cosplay?

Link because he’s got so many different looks! Especially in Breath of the Wild. There’s so many unique ways to cosplay him it’s so much fun. He’s been a character in my life since I was 6 or 7. Cosplaying a character that’s been a part of my life for so long is such a surreal experience.

IF YOU COULD LIVE IN OR VISIT ANY FANTASY WORLD, WHERE WOULD YOU GO?

This is tough. Probably Hyrule. It’s got so many different elements and landscapes, also I’d love to see the Gorons and the Zoras.

Where do you get your inspiration for your cosplays?

Either by watching a show or playing a game. I’m by no means a planner. I’m super spontaneous when it comes to deciding what I’m going to cosplay. Usually I’ll be either playing a game or watching a show and be like “hm they’d be really fun to cosplay” and just roll with it.

WHAT ARE YOUR “FANDOMS”?

Zelda and pretty much anything Nintendo related. I also love Overwatch, Castlevania, Naruto and a bunch of other animes.

WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU WISH BEGINNING COSPLAYERS KNEW?

Nobody knows what they’re doing and we all make mistakes. No cosplayer is perfect and we all started somewhere. I promise that if you stick with cosplay you will get better. There definitely is a learning curve and you’ll fail more than once. But every single one of us has been there. None of us started this hobby already knowing everything. It takes a lot of work but it’s well worth it!

WHAT TIPS OR TRICKS DO YOU HAVE FOR OTHER COSPLAYERS?

Making little business cards with all your social media handles is a great way to connect with other cosplayers at cons! It can be kind of like Pokemon trading with all the cosplayers that pass around cards. Even if you’re not “cosplay famous” or whatever, it’s so convenient.

WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU WISH NON-COSPLAYERS KNEW?

Please respect personal space. Taking pictures with cosplayers at a con is usually fine, as long as you ask. But some of us aren’t comfortable with strangers touching us or putting their arm around us for photos. Always ask and respect cosplayer’s answers!

WHAT COSPLAYS ARE YOU WORKING ON?

Ryuko Matoi from Kill La Kill and Fierce Deity Link from Majora’s Mask

WHAT COSPLAYS DO YOU WANT TO DO IF MONEY AND TIME WERE NO OBJECT?

Either this Armor Charizard design by Apipcosplay or a Samus Varia suit.

WHERE CAN PEOPLE FIND YOUR COSPLAYS?

I’m on Instagram (wintendo.64), twitter (wintendo_64), and Facebook (wintendo64cosplay). I also share them on my blog wintendo64.com.

Please remember I do not own any of these pictures and the opinions in this survey belong to the interviewee.
