This gorgeous cosplayer has some great cosplays and great insights! Enjoy the interview!
WHAT IS YOUR NAME?
My name is Megan – my personal handle is xmegantron on Twitter and Instagram, and my cosplay handle is xmegantroncosplay.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE BEVERAGE?
I love strawberry lemonade; it has a really comforting quality, so it’s not unusual for my husband to hear me go, “heeeey, do you want to do me a favor?” at 11 pm and ask him to mix up some strawberry lemonade slushies.
TELL ME A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELF.
I’m 27 years young, and I live in the heart of the midwest, Indianapolis, IN. I have a super addictive personality, in that when I fall in love with a fandom, I become insatiable; I want any and all information regarding that thing. This is how I’ve become such a super fan of Harry Potter, Doctor Who, and Star Wars. I just cannot get enough of something that I love. Some additional boring stuff: I have three fur babies, two dogs and a cat. I’m hoping to start including them in more of my cosplays.
WHEN DID YOU START COSPLAYING?
I started cosplaying a few years ago, although I’d argue that I’ve been cosplaying since I dressed as Leia for Halloween when I was 7 years old. After my first Renaissance Faire 3 years ago, I was hooked.
Why do you cosplay?
I would go back to my addictive personality – I love to fully immerse myself by fandoms and cultures that I love. I also love being a part of a loving and accepting community, and I think I’ve met the best people at conventions, where I truly feel at home. It’s also a super fun way to bond with my husband; we do a lot of our cosplays together and it’s great to choose and create them as a team.
WHO ARE YOUR COSPLAY IDOLS?
@vantasmagorical is someone I went to college with and is probably the first cosplayer that inspired me to try it myself. @donttouchmymilk cosplay is my favorite to visit; she’s insanely talented and inspires me everytime I see another of her shoots.
WHAT TYPES OF COSPLAY DO YOU DO?
I mostly stick to fandom (Harry Potter, Doctor Who, Star Wars), but I love to do ideas that nobody has done before. I mash up Game of Thrones and Star Wars, or Harry Potter and Game of Thrones — I will do Doctor Horrible’s Sing Along Blog with my husband, or I will make my off @PuffsPlay cosplay. My most recent casual cosplay was Miguel and Tulio from The Road to El Dorado.
WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE COSPLAYS?
My favorite cosplay that somebody else has done is Effie Trinket from @donttouchmymilk cosplay. My favorite I have done is Kaylee from Firefly. I met Jewel Staite in my cosplay and it was a dream.
WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU WANT TO COSPLAY BUT PROBABLY NEVER WILL?
I would love to do a full Transformer cosplay, but unfortunately I don’t have the craftsmanship to pull it off!
DO YOU MAKE, BUY, OR SPECIAL ORDER YOUR COSPLAYS?
I buy/special order my cosplays. I am NOT crafty.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT COSPLAY?
I love immersing myself in the world of a character. It’s an escape that feels like stepping through my own Narnia wardrobe, or through the wall leading to Diagon Alley. There’s no feeling like it.
WHAT IS THE MOST DIFFICULT THING FOR YOU ABOUT COSPLAY?
It’s so expensive. I’m still working out a way to get more of my cosplays professionally photographed but I need to learn how to create collaborations a bit better!
WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE CHARACTER TO COSPLAY?
I love Kaylee from Firefly.
IF YOU COULD LIVE IN OR VISIT ANY FANTASY WORLD, WHERE WOULD YOU GO?
I would most DEFINITELY go to Hogwarts!
WHERE DO YOU GET YOUR INSPIRATION FOR YOUR COSPLAYS?
I get them from the shows and movies I watch (or obsess over!).
WHAT ARE YOUR “FANDOMS”?
Harry Potter, Doctor Who, Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Firefly
WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU WISH BEGINNING COSPLAYERS KNEW?
It’s okay to start small. It’s okay to fail! It’s okay to try an elaborate costume and for it to look nothing like the character. Cosplaying is for YOU, and not for others!
WHAT TIPS OR TRICKS DO YOU HAVE FOR OTHER COSPLAYERS?
Sometimes it’s easier to find individual pieces as opposed to buying a full costume from an expensive retailer. Be sly about how you piece together full cosplays; it works out! Also – don’t be afraid to cosplay away from your comfort zone. Try to do a funny cosplay, or an inaccurate cosplay. Be whoever you want to be!
WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU WISH NON-COSPLAYERS KNEW?
Not all cosplays have to be sexy, and not all cosplayers have to be a size zero! I am proud to be a plus size cosplayer who is cosplaying NON-plus sized characters. I do it for me, and not for anybody else. Don’t get me wrong; I want people to love to look at my characters, but if people think I’m too big to be Amidala, those people can unfollow me!
WHAT COSPLAYS ARE YOU WORKING ON?
Currently my husband and I are sourcing a Hamilton cosplay. I also have a Margaery Tyrell in my head which will be in the works soon.
WHAT COSPLAYS DO YOU WANT TO DO IF MONEY AND TIME WERE NO OBJECT?
I would probably already have my Hamilton done!
WHERE CAN PEOPLE FIND YOUR COSPLAYS?
All of my cosplays are currently being posted on my IG (xmegantroncosplay).
What is the least favorite cosplay you’ve ever done?
That answer is SO EASY. My husband and I tried to do a Rick Grimes and Lori Grimes cosplay, but I was convinced I could only do Lori if she were dead and pregnant. The result was MESSY AND AWFUL. I may try again in the future.
Please remember I do not own any of these pictures and the opinions in this survey belong to the interviewee.
