Weirdies Supporting Weirdies!

Cosplayer Spotlight – Always River

I have just started getting into the Dr Who fandom, and I’m already super fangirling over these amazing cosplays! Whovians, this cosplayer is for you!

Hi, how are you known in the cosplay community?

Always River

What is your favorite beverage?

Having traveled all over space and time, I’d still have to say that a good ole’ gin & tonic fits the bill. Throw in a splash of St. Germain for extra fiestiness!

When did you start cosplaying?

I thought it’d be a kick to throw on the husband’s trousers for a day out in 2013 & so did a little jaunt about as The Doctor’s 11th incarnation.

Why did you start cosplaying?

Well it’s just no fun walking around in your plain clothes, now is it?

Who are your cosplay idols?

Time Lady K Cosplay is brilliant. (Alright, so I’m a bit biased for a fellow River…)

What type of cosplays do you do?

Science is my name & Fiction is my game. I’ll always be a Sci-Fi girl at heart.

What are your favorite cosplays?

Why, River Song, of course. How else would the hubs recognize me when we cross paths? I also adore seeing my beloved in all his, um, versions…

What is something you want to cosplay but probably never will?

Oh, that dress I wore to the last Frost Fair in London was superb. I’d like to throw that frock on again.

Do you make, buy, or special order your cosplays?

I’m a scavenger. I have a knack for seeing what something can be and making it so. I just can’t be bothered to sew a stitch.

What do you love about cosplay?

The glamour, darling! There’s nothing more exciting that getting dressed up and pretending to be whoever you fancy.

What is the most difficult thing for you about cosplay?

There’s just never enough, ahem, time. If I could twitch my nose or blink my eyes & have a perfect cosplay, I’d do it in an instant!

Who is your favorite character to cosplay?

There’s just something about Dr. Song, isn’t there?

If you could live in/visit any fantasy tell, where would you go?

One night on Darillium would suit me just fine. 24 years with The Doctor? The mind races…

Where do you get your inspiration for your cosplays?

Such a sense of style, that River – sassy and spunky, but equally kick-ass.

What are your “fandoms”?

Doctor Who?

What is something you wish beginning cosplayers knew?

It’s not how accurate you are in every stitch or curl…it’s how you FEEL as your character.

What tips do you have for other cosplayers?

Make friends along the way. Join all the groups of cosplayers you can find – near & far. A support system is essential.

What is something you wish non-cosplayers knew?

Your first cosplay nor your 100th cosplay need to be perfect. Do your best with what you have and OWN it.

What cosplays are you working on?

I’ve still got some touch-ups and refinements to do to some oldies but goodies. I’d like to try my hand at some off-canon & Big Finish looks.

What cosplays do you want to do if money/time were no object?

Again, that Frost Fair bit is quite the stunner.

Have you ever met the actor who portrays the character you cosplay? If so, what was their reaction?

I’ve met Alex Kingston on a number of occasions now, and she is always amazed at the detail involved in my cosplays. She even once took a photo of me as Cleopatra on her phone!

Where can people find your cosplays?

Everywhere, sweeties! Facebook/Twitter/Instagram: @alwaysriver11; alwaysriver11.tumblr.com
