Hello, what can we call you?
I am Jay, one half of Team Emerald Cosplay. Also EmeraldArrow on Aminos and various forums.
When did you start cosplaying?
Unofficially about a year and a half ago, just wearing a cheaply bought Arrow costume to a convention. Officially, just less than a year ago when we decided to have a proper go at it, make a page, and start making our own costumes instead.
Why did you start cosplaying?
It looked like a lot of fun seeing others do it at conventions, and I always got that sense of missing out back then. I always had a need for a creative outlet too, going through previous hobbies such as Warhammer.

Who are your cosplay idols?
I don’t tend to necessarily idolize or fanboy over people. Creatively speaking I have probably learned a lot more from Evil Ted and Punished Props than anyone else. But honestly everyone is great in their own way.
What types of cosplay do you do?
So far it has been DC TV, and video games, but for 2018 my new costumes will include comics and movies also.
What are your favorite cosplays?
I only did four in my first year, which were Green Arrow, Gerlat of Rivia, Prometheus and Reverse Flash, so I don’t have a lot to choose from there. They are all important in their own way. Green Arrow is where I began, what I have put the most time into, and the best representation of my own personal progression, as well as my favorite comic hero. Geralt was the first costume that I built from scratch, and I have actually made two different armour sets for the character. This taught me lots of prop techniques such a foamsmithing, worbla crafting and working chainmail. In a similar vein Prometheus taught me most of what I know of sewing, and is a HEAVILY altered piece, that is 90% original and 10% the starting garments. It also gave me an excuse to try woodworking, and was also my first villain. And Reverse Flash was the first costume I sewed from scratch, so that was very important to me.

What is something you want to cosplay but probably never will?
Nothing. I firmly believe that if I want to do something I can do it. The harder it is, the more I will learn.
Do you make, buy, or special order your cosplays?
I make everything I use now, be that sewing, foamsmithing, worbla work, etc. I like the creativity and sense of reward for building my own gear.
What do you love about cosplay?
As above, the creativity is a big thing to me. I love creating and building. And I won’t lie, the attention at cons can be infectious. There is a cool sense of completion when you day is made by making someone else’s.

What is the most difficult thing for you about cosplay?
Time. There is never enough time in the day, the week, the month. There is nearly always a deadline, but that keeps things going also. A day with nothing done is a day wasted.
Who is your favorite character to cosplay?
They are all fun, but Green Arrow is my favorite. It is my favorite character, the costume has gone through so much work to be as close to the TV suit as possible, it gets a great reaction at conventions, and it just plain suits me. Nothing like not having to smile for your photos.
Where do you get your inspiration for your cosplays?
Everywhere honestly. The characters come off the page or screen, but the implementation of those characters can come from all around you.
What is something you wish beginning cosplayers knew?
To try everything. Trying and failing will help you learn and get better. Not doing stuff because you don’t think you can will get you nowhere. All of it is hard, and simultaneously all of it is easy. It just depends on how much you try and how much you practice.

What tips/tricks do you have for other cosplayers?
You be you. It’s that simple. Don’t cosplay for anybody else.
What is something you wish non-cosplayers knew?
What they are missing. Having been there, I can empathise.
What cosplays are you working on?
I am currently working on a commission for a client, finishing up my Season 6 bow for Green Arrow, building a New 52 armour set from EVA foam, and somewhere in there working on my swords for Talion from Shadow of War.

What cosplays do you want to do if money and time were no object?
Top of the line right now would be a working Savitar suit from the Flash Season 3. Not just the lights, but the exo skeleton and all.
Where can people find your cosplays?
We have a few accounts, mostly as Team Emerald Cosplay. Our main source is Facebook but we also have Instagram and I myself am active on Amino as EmeraldArrow. Links to Facebook and Instagram are below. There is also a link to my etsy shop where I sell props and prints.
Please remember I do not own any of these pictures and the opinions in this survey belong to the interviewee.
