WHAT IS YOUR NAME?

My Name is Christina Gutierrez-Cozine but I go by the name of Silvan Moon Cosplay.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE BEVERAGE?

Oh there are so many. Honestly I love coffee, an iced white chocolate mocha with almond milk no whip is my go to. Though if I’m feeling a little more in the mood I love a good Jamaican non-alcoholic ginger beer! These two drinks have gotten me through many nights of con crunching.

TELL ME A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELF.

Well I’m in my mid thirties with a wonderful, supporting husband and an amazing daughter that has started to cosplay alongside me. I am also a huge animal lover. I have two dogs, two cats, two conures, small parrots for those who don’t know what a conure is, and a corn snake.

WHEN DID YOU START COSPLAYING?

That depends on your definition of cosplay. I made my first closet cosplay when I was 12 years old, so 22 years ago. It was Storm from the X-Men. I had sourced everything from the thrift store and used flour to make my day brown hair “white”. It totally sucked and I wish I had photos of it. As far as getting serious into cosplay, that started four years ago with my original Tauriel.

WHY DO YOU COSPLAY?

I cosplay to have fun and do something that I love. Seeing something that you’ve spent a good amount of time in from concept to final form is a huge reward. I love the feeling of accomplishment when I put that last final details on a cosplay. Then the adrenaline rush when I step out in it for the first time. There’s nothing quite like that feeling.

WHO ARE YOUR COSPLAY IDOLS?

Most of the cosplayers that I look up to are not big and famous at all. Jack Blair from Tricks Lights Cosplay is a huge inspiration to me. His costumes are on point. From the minute details to becoming the character through mannerisms and facial expressions. I also love Airelle Lien of Air Bubbles Cosplay. Her builds are so fun to watch from concept, though each piece being made, and into the completed cosplay. She also does panels that help new cosplayers learn for to use materials such as Warbla. Which I find truly amazing since so many are intimidated by that particular material.

WHAT TYPES OF COSPLAY DO YOU DO?

I really do prefer fantasy and SciFi coplays. Though I won’t shy away from the idea of doing something out of my comfort zone if I find the right one. Honestly I think each one I do is really a different part of who I am. I have many cosplays that fall into the SciFi and fantasy realm with a few that are just sort fun. My main is Tauriel from the film versions of The Hobbit. I also have River Song from Doctor Who, Han Solo from Star Wars, Melisandre from Game of Thrones, The Crow based off of James O’Barr’s graphic novels, Pam Poovey from Archer, a Blood Fire elf that’s an original character, two versions of my original steampunk vampire named Zylthia, several versions of a Ravenclaw student, and Dark Phoenix from the X-Men.

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE COSPLAYS?

I’ve seen so many! I would have to say my favorite one is the Thorin Oakinshield that Jesse Lagers from Midnight Armor did. It was first revealed on Heros of Cosplay and since then has been retired. I often run into Jesse at cons and have sat through panels that he had been a party of. My reason for loving his Thorin so much is because of all the little aspects he paid attention too from how the layers were to look all the way down to the rings that Thorin wore. All in all it was a top notch cosplay from top to bottom.

I’ve also love seeing builds that include the use of smoke machines, LEDS, and originality.

WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU WANT TO COSPLAY BUT PROBABLY NEVER WILL?

Oh wow, that’s a hard one. Honestly that would have to be Deathscythe Hell Custom. I mean who wouldn’t want to be a Gundam! Especially one of the coolest ones from Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz. My reasoning is because the build would be way more then I’m up for. I’d probably just settle for cosplaying Duo Maxwell instead.

DO YOU MAKE, BUY, OR SPECIAL ORDER YOUR COSPLAYS?

Really it’s all of the above. I mean sometimes there are things that you might not be able to make yourself or you’re on a serious time crunch. As long as you are giving credit to the person to commissioned pieces though and not passing it if as if you were the one that made it then it’s not a big issue.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT COSPLAY?

Cosplay to me is very personal. It allows one to be free. To be someone else for the day. I grew up in a stressful environment and my escape was being in theater. So for me it’s a very reassuring and comforting thing for me to do. I love that it’s become such a huge community and that I have made some truly wonderful and loving individuals that have become dear friends.

WHAT IS THE MOST DIFFICULT THING FOR YOU ABOUT COSPLAY?

I think the most difficult thing for me would be how outside people view it. I’ve had friends, family, and strangers tell me that costumes are for kids and j need to grow up and act like an adult. Though the hive majority of cosplayers are adults. Really that’s the hardest thing I can thing of.

WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE CHARACTER TO COSPLAY?

My favorite has got to be Tauriel and The Crow. Tauriel because she is fierce and determined to follow her heart and her gut instinct. She has a willingness to love someone forbidden to her and to walk her own path despite everything that she risks losing. As for The Crow it’s really a character about coming back to avenge the wrongs done to one you love. Plus there are so many versions of The Crow if you read the graphic novels so it’s so open to interpretation as to how you want to portray the character.

IF YOU COULD LIVE IN OR VISIT ANY FANTASY WORLD, WHERE WOULD YOU GO?

That’s a super easy question. I would 100% go live in Middle-Earth! Really you could just drop me off in New Zealand and leave me there! I’m sure WETA Workshop won’t mind me dwelling in Bag End.

WHERE DO YOU GET YOUR INSPIRATION FOR YOUR COSPLAYS?

I get most inspiration from my own connection or deep interest from seeing character on screen or reading about them in the pages of book our in a comic. In part there is something about each one that I wish I was or I wish I could become. I see each cosplay as it’s own individual entity. One that I help bring to life.

WHAT ARE YOUR “FANDOMS”?

There are many! Doctor Who, the world of Tolkien, X-Men, Harry Potter, just to name a few.

WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU WISH BEGINNING COSPLAYERS KNEW?

It takes time. It’s not something that happens over night to do. Researching a character will help a lot to decide if that’s the one you really want to do. Plus tutorials are your friend. Watch as many as you can, rewatching them and saving the ones you find the most useful will help aid you when you need a quick refresher in the future. Also please don’t expect other cosplayers to make you things for free just because they are your friend. We can give you lots of pointers, advise, resources, and at times hands on demonstrations. Commissioning pieces are also a way to go but don’t try and barter on the price, it takes us time, material, and research to create the items being requested.

WHAT TIPS OR TRICKS DO YOU HAVE FOR OTHER COSPLAYERS?

As I said before tutorials are your friend! I have watched so many hours worth it crazy. Attend classes in your area too if you can. Sometimes your local supply store will hold them and you can get lots of great info there. Plus whole there you can work with someone who has been doing coplay for a long time. Also EVA foam! It’s awesome stuff and can be used for so many things!

WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU WISH NON-COSPLAYERS KNEW?

This is our hobby, our outlet, our passion. Just as some of you spend your money on football games, concert tickets, or lavish days at the spa we choose to make and dress up in amazing costumes and attend photoshoots and comic cons. We are just as normal as you are. The only difference is our hobby. The community built between cosplayers is truly astounding to say the least.

WHAT COSPLAYS ARE YOU WORKING ON?

Currently I am starting on Helena Ravenclaw (the Ravenclaw house ghost) and Captain Elizabeth Swann from Pirates of the Caribbean: At Works End. I’m in the research and drafting stage and will be debuting both at Rose City Comic Con in Portland, Oregon.

WHAT COSPLAYS DO YOU WANT TO DO IF MONEY AND TIME WERE NO OBJECT?

If money and time were no object I would definitely be making steampunk version of Captain Phasma from Star Wars complete with LEDs and fiber optics. It just think that would be extremely fun and original to make.
